Austin Opera Brings French Masterpiece ‘Thaïs’ to the Long Center November 13 and 15, Exploring Love, Faith and Obsession

Austin
October 07 2026

An evening at the opera can transport audiences centuries into the past while exploring questions that remain surprisingly familiar today. This November, Central Texas residents will have an opportunity to experience just that as Austin Opera presents Jules Massenet’s Thaïs on November 13 and 15, 2026, at the Long Center for the Performing Arts in Austin.

Set in ancient Egypt, Thaïs tells a story of beauty, spiritual awakening and the complicated relationship between love and devotion. The production brings together internationally recognized opera singers, the Austin Opera Orchestra and Chorus, and a creative team whose work offers a fresh interpretation of a French classic that premiered more than 130 years ago.

For Austin-area residents looking for live performances, classical music concerts or cultural events in November, the production offers something beyond a traditional night at the theater. It is an opportunity to experience a sweeping musical drama that asks what happens when personal conviction becomes obsession, and whether the desire to save another person can sometimes reveal something unexpected about oneself.

What Is ‘Thaïs’ About? A Story of Beauty, Faith and Unexpected Transformation

First performed at the Paris Opera in 1894, Thaïs takes audiences to fourth-century Alexandria, Egypt, where a celebrated courtesan named Thaïs has captivated the city's wealthy and influential residents.

Admired for her beauty, intelligence and charm, Thaïs enjoys a life of luxury and devotion to Venus, the goddess of love. Yet beneath her glamorous existence lies an uncertainty about aging, happiness and what gives life lasting meaning.

Her world changes when Athanaël, a Christian monk who once admired her, becomes determined to persuade her to abandon her former life and pursue spiritual salvation.

What begins as a religious mission develops into something far more complicated.

As Thaïs begins questioning the life she has known and moves toward faith, Athanaël struggles with feelings he cannot easily reconcile with his religious commitments. Their intertwined journeys ultimately explore the boundaries between spiritual devotion, earthly desire and personal transformation.

Rather than presenting a simple story of right and wrong, Massenet's opera examines the contradictions within human nature, giving audiences room to consider the characters' decisions and motivations.

Meet the Composer: Jules Massenet and the Music Behind ‘Thaïs’

French composer Jules Massenet (1842-1912) was among the most influential opera composers of the late 19th century, known for creating expressive musical works that explored love, personal sacrifice and emotional conflict.

Born in France, Massenet studied at the Paris Conservatoire and became a leading figure in French Romantic opera. His works include Manon, Werther and Thaïs, each recognized for richly developed characters and music that captures the emotional complexity of their stories.

Thaïs features a French-language libretto by Louis Gallet, based on the novel by French author Anatole France.

Perhaps the opera's most recognizable musical passage is "Méditation," a lyrical violin solo that has become one of classical music's best-known compositions.

Performed as an orchestral interlude, the piece accompanies a pivotal moment in Thaïs' spiritual transformation. Its expressive melody has also found a life beyond the opera house, frequently appearing in classical concerts and violin recitals around the world.

For listeners unfamiliar with opera, "Méditation" offers an accessible introduction to Massenet's musical style, where the orchestra communicates emotions that words alone cannot fully express.

The Austin production will feature the music as part of the complete dramatic experience, allowing audiences to hear the celebrated composition within the story for which it was originally written.

Acclaimed Singers and Creative Team Bring ‘Thaïs’ to Austin

Austin Opera's production features soprano Nicole Heaston in the title role of Thaïs and baritone Troy Cook as Athanaël.

Both performers previously appeared in the production's 2025 staging at Spoleto Festival USA, bringing experience with the characters and their demanding vocal and dramatic roles to Austin.

Additional cast members include Sergio Martinez as Palémon and Dominick Valdés Chenes as Nicias. Martinez will make his Austin Opera debut.

Austin Opera's Sarah and Ernest Butler Music Director Timothy Myers will conduct the Austin Opera Orchestra and Chorus, while stage director Crystal Manich returns following her work on the company's 2026 production of Fiddler on the Roof.

The creative team also includes costume designer Brandon McDonald, lighting designer Tláloc López-Watterman, projection designer Greg Emetaz and movement designer Michael Pappalardo.

A co-production between Spoleto Festival USA and Austin Opera, Thaïs is part of the company's Opera Unleashed series, which introduces company premieres and major operatic works to Austin audiences.

The production combines music, theatrical design and visual storytelling to bring the contrasting worlds of ancient Alexandria and the Egyptian desert to the stage.

The Long Center for the Performing Arts: A Cultural Landmark in Austin

The performances will take place at the Long Center for the Performing Arts, located at 701 W. Riverside Drive in Austin, along the southern shore of Lady Bird Lake.

Since opening in 2008, the Long Center has become one of Austin's most recognizable cultural destinations, hosting opera, ballet, symphony performances, theatrical productions and community events.

Its location near downtown Austin offers sweeping views of the city skyline, while its performance spaces provide a home for some of Central Texas' leading arts organizations.

The Long Center serves as a performance home for Austin Opera, Ballet Austin and the Austin Symphony Orchestra, reflecting the city's longstanding investment in live performing arts.

For residents who primarily associate Austin with live bands, music festivals and contemporary entertainment, the venue represents another important part of the city's musical identity: a community where classical music, dance and opera continue to have a place alongside newer artistic traditions.

Austin Opera Celebrates 40 Years of Bringing Performing Arts to Central Texas

Founded in 1986, Austin Opera has spent four decades introducing audiences to classical opera while expanding opportunities for local artists, students and emerging creative talent.

The organization reaches more than 30,000 people annually through performances, educational initiatives and community engagement programs.

Since 1991, its educational programming has introduced more than 200,000 students to opera and the performing arts, including opportunities designed to connect classroom learning with live music and theater.

The 2026-2027 season marks an important chapter in the organization's growth.

Alongside Thaïs, the season includes Ofrenda, Austin Opera's first commissioned world premiere, which opened in October; the Texas premiere of Fellow Travelers in February 2027; and Giuseppe Verdi's La traviata in April 2027.

The season also coincides with the opening of the new Sarah and Ernest Butler Performance Center in Southeast Austin, which officially opened September 26, 2026. The facility includes a theater, rehearsal spaces and Austin Opera's administrative headquarters, providing additional opportunities for performances, artistic collaboration and community programming.

Together, these developments reflect an expanding performing arts landscape in Austin, with established venues such as the Long Center continuing to host major productions while newer spaces create opportunities for smaller performances and community connections.

A Chance to Experience a Different Side of Austin's Live Music Scene

Austin's reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World is often associated with concerts, festivals and local music venues. Yet productions such as Thaïs offer another perspective on the city's musical life, connecting Central Texas audiences with works that have been performed internationally for generations.

For longtime opera enthusiasts, the November performances provide an opportunity to experience Massenet's music through a major staged production. For first-time attendees, the story's recognizable human themes and English translations offer an approachable introduction to an art form that combines music, theater and visual design.

At its heart, Thaïs is about people searching for meaning, sometimes discovering that their deepest convictions are more complicated than they first believed.

More than a century after its premiere, that remains a story worth telling.
