Alvin Shadow Creek Tops Cy Falls to Win Cy-Hoops Invitational Title
Alvin Shadow Creek High School defeated Cypress Falls High School, 40-32, in the championship game of the 14th annual Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational on Dec. 9 at the Berry Center to win the 24-team tournament.
It’s the first Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational title for Shadow Creek, which reached the consolidation championship game in last year’s tournament. The Sharks are the fourth consecutive different invitational champion, following the second of Lancaster High School’s two titles (2019), McKinney High School (2021) and Denton Guyer High School (2022).
Cypress Falls finished as the invitational runner-up for the fourth time overall and second time in three seasons. The Golden Eagles defeated Pflugerville Weiss High School (63-55), Cy-Fair High School (46-45), McKinney (64-59) and Langham Creek High School (42-31) to reach the championship game.
Langham Creek faced Cypress Springs High School in the third-place game, with the Lobos winning, 78-66. Keller High School won the consolation championship by defeating Pflugerville Weiss, 65-34.
Shadow Creek junior guard Michael Collins was named the Houston Methodist Cy-Hoops Invitational Most Valuable Player. Cypress Falls senior forward Brayden Young won the De’Aaron Fox Most Outstanding Player Award. Named after the former Cypress Lakes High School basketball standout and current NBA star, the honor is awarded to a player who excels on the court but also embodies the spirit of a student-athlete.
“First and foremost, this is an amazing tournament with tons of talent, tons of competition, great coaches and great programs, and for us and our program, it’s taking another step in the right direction as we continue to build,” Shadow Creek Head Coach David President said. “We appreciate the hospitality here. So to get here and get a win on this floor feels really good.”
In partnership with Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital and Houston Methodist West Hospital, the three-day tournament benefits the Cy-Fair Educational Foundation (CFEF). Sponsorships from dozens of local businesses also helped support the cause, along with team meals and hospitality donations generously provided by local restaurants and businesses.
A completed bracket with results from the tournament is available on the Berry Center website.
