Lone Star College-CyFair Brings Art, Creativity and Marvel-Inspired Family Fun to Cypress This Summer
As temperatures rise across Cypress and Northwest Houston, Lone Star College-CyFair is inviting the community indoors for a summer filled with creativity, culture and family-friendly entertainment.
Located at 9191 Barker Cypress Road, the college’s Center for the Arts will host two unique art exhibitions and a live children's theater production this June and July, giving residents, families and visitors an opportunity to experience local and emerging artistic talent close to home.
Summer Art Exhibitions Offer a Creative Escape
Art enthusiasts looking for things to do in Cypress this summer can explore two distinctive exhibitions at the Bosque Gallery.
The first, “Wait for It,” features Houston painter, artist and educator Julie De Vries and runs from June 15 through June 25. The exhibition explores themes of time, sequence, nature and personal reflection through De Vries’ thought-provoking artwork. Visitors will also have the opportunity to meet the artist and learn more about her creative process during a closing reception scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on June 25.
Later this summer, the gallery will showcase “Etereo,” a multimedia exhibition by Vicky Suarez, a 2019 Lone Star College-CyFair alum whose work has gained recognition beyond the college’s student art programs. Running from July 9 through Aug. 20, the exhibition combines materials and interactive elements in unexpected ways, encouraging visitors to engage with the artwork from multiple perspectives.
Community members can meet Suarez and learn about her journey from award-winning student artist to solo exhibitor during opening and closing receptions, as well as a special artist event from noon to 2 p.m. on July 23.
Gallery hours and exhibition details are available at LoneStar.edu/BosqueGallery.
Marvel's Squirrel Girl Takes the Stage
Families searching for affordable summer activities for children in Cypress will also find a superhero-sized adventure at the Center for the Arts.
The LSC-CyFair Drama Department's Summer Children's Show, “Squirrel Girl Goes to College,” will run June 23 through June 25 in the Main Stage Theatre.
Written by Karen Zacarias and based on the popular Marvel Comics character, the comedic mystery follows Doreen Green—better known as Squirrel Girl—as she begins life at Empire State University while attempting to keep her superhero identity secret. When a beloved computer science professor mysteriously disappears, Doreen must decide whether to trust her new friends and reveal her squirrel-powered abilities to solve the case.
“Come see this fun-loving Marvel Universe hero as she uses squirrel-like abilities and positive attitude along with Tippy-Toe at her side to solve the case of the missing professor,” said Joshua Estrada, Fine Arts Coordinator. “This Squirrel Girl Play by Karen Zacarias is perfect for Marvel fans of all ages, families, daycares and other youth groups.”
Performances will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday through Thursday, with additional family night performances at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday and Thursday. Children's tickets are available for $5.
Schools, daycares and other large groups can obtain additional information by contacting the college directly.

Events like these highlight the growing role Lone Star College-CyFair plays as both an educational institution and a cultural destination for the Cypress community. While many residents know the campus for its academic programs, the college's galleries, performances and public events continue to provide opportunities for residents of all ages to connect with the arts without leaving the area.
Registration for summer and fall classes is currently underway, offering another opportunity for local residents to pursue educational and career goals while staying connected to one of the region's largest higher education institutions.
