A Legacy of Learning: Katy ISD Honors Nelson Family with Junior High on Their Historic Land
A deep-rooted legacy of education and community service was honored as Katy ISD leaders, students, educators, and local officials gathered to dedicate Nelson Junior High School. The school, built on land once owned by the Nelson family, stands as a tribute to their nearly century-long impact on the district and the greater Katy community.
The Nelson family’s contributions to Katy ISD span multiple generations, with members having served as educators, community leaders, and school board members. During the ceremony, Superintendent Dr. Ken Gregorski highlighted the family’s influence on education and community development.

“The Nelson family’s contribution to the Katy community is remarkable and enduring,” said Gregorski. “Their commitment to education, agriculture, and community service has left an indelible impact on Katy ISD and the City of Katy. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to them for their legacy of service.”
The dedication event featured musical performances from the Nelson Junior High orchestra, band, and choir, as well as speeches from Katy city officials and Texas legislators, including Mayor William “Dusty” Thiele, Harris County Commissioner Lesley Briones, State Senator Lois Kolkhorst, State Representative Michael Schofield, and U.S. Representative Morgan Luttrell.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Dean Nelson reflected on the deep ties between the land and the values of education and perseverance. His grandparents, Clyde and Leatha Nelson, purchased the property in the late 1930s, working the land for decades before it became the site for both Nelson Junior High and Freeman High School.
“All you teachers here are no longer teachers. You are now ‘farming’ on the same land that we farmed for 50 years,” said Nelson. “May God bless each and every child that ever enters this building to be motivated to learn, and may each and every teacher, administrator, and staff person be dedicated to teach.”

Nelson Junior High Principal Kara Morgan emphasized that the school’s dedication represents more than just a new building—it symbolizes a shared commitment to student success.
“This dedication represents our shared commitment to excellence, growth, and a bright future for every student who walks these halls,” Morgan said. “It is a testament to the hard work, collaboration, and vision of so many: our namesakes, dedicated teachers, staff, parents, Katy ISD leaders, board members, and of course, our amazing students.”
