A pair of shoes can say more about a life than most people realize.

The work boots someone wore every day. The sneakers that carried a child through school. Cowboy boots pulled on for special occasions. Sandals from ordinary summer afternoons.

Williamson County is asking residents to contribute those everyday items to a communitywide shoe drive designed to put a human face on suicide loss and remind families that behind every statistic is a person who lived, was loved and is remembered.

The Williamson County suicide awareness shoe drive runs from Aug. 21 through Sept. 7 as part of the county's observance of Suicide Awareness Month in September. New or gently used shoes of any type, size or style are being accepted for a visual remembrance display planned for September.

Why Williamson County Is Collecting Shoes

For Williamson County families, the project is intended to make an issue often discussed through numbers feel more personal and recognizable.

Each donated pair will become part of a visual display representing the human impact of suicide. Athletic shoes, work boots, cowboy boots, dress shoes, sandals and children's shoes are all welcome.

The county has not yet announced the date, location or final details of the September suicide awareness display, saying additional information will be released closer to the event.

The effort also gives ordinary shoe donations a second purpose. After the awareness event, general donated shoes will be provided to local organizations to help community members in need.

That means a pair donated by a Williamson County resident can first help tell an important community story and later continue serving someone locally.

Where to Donate Shoes in Williamson County

Residents can drop off new or gently used shoes at any Williamson County justice of the peace office through Sept. 7:

The four collection sites make the Williamson County shoe donation drive accessible to residents across Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Taylor and surrounding communities.

Families Can Contribute a Loved One's Shoes as a Memorial

The county is also extending a separate invitation to people who have lost someone to suicide.

Suicide loss survivors may contribute a pair of shoes that belonged to their loved one for inclusion in the remembrance display. Unlike general shoe donations, those memorial shoes will not be given away after the event.

Williamson County plans to respectfully preserve memorial shoes for use in future suicide awareness and remembrance displays. Families wishing to contribute a loved one's shoes can contact Ruben Leal through Williamson County to arrange a personal pickup. The pickup service is specifically reserved for memorial donations.

For families carrying a loss that can be difficult to put into words, the memorial offers a simple and deeply personal way to make sure a loved one's presence remains part of the community conversation.

A Community Reminder Behind Every Pair

Suicide prevention and mental health awareness can be difficult subjects for families, workplaces and neighborhoods to discuss. Williamson County's display takes a deliberately tangible approach: placing something familiar and personal in front of residents rather than allowing individual lives to disappear into statistics.

Every pair of shoes belonged to—or could have belonged to—someone walking through the same schools, workplaces, neighborhoods and public spaces shared by everyone else.

That is also what makes this Williamson County suicide awareness event more than a collection drive. It creates room for remembrance while connecting residents with resources that may help someone who is struggling now.

Mental Health Crisis Resources Available 24/7

Anyone experiencing a mental health crisis, or anyone concerned about someone they know, can call or text the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.

Residents may also call the Bluebonnet Trails Community Services Crisis Line at 800-841-1255. 

Both services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

What Happens Next

Williamson County is expected to announce the September display's date, location and additional event details closer to the observance.

Until then, residents have through Monday, Sept. 7 to contribute general shoe donations at one of the county's four justice of the peace offices. Families contributing memorial shoes should coordinate directly with the county rather than leaving those shoes at a general collection location.

For Williamson County residents, the effort offers a practical way to help a neighbor while also acknowledging families whose losses may remain with them for a lifetime.
