Williamson County 'Learn to Fish' Event Returns April 11 at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park in Leander

March 13 2026

For many Central Texas families, spring means more time outdoors — and Williamson County leaders are hoping to help the next generation discover one of Texas’ most beloved traditions.

On Saturday, April 11, Williamson County will host its annual Learn to Fish event at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park in Leander, offering children a hands-on introduction to fishing and outdoor recreation. The free community event runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the park located at 3005 Co Rd 175, Leander, TX 78641, where young anglers of all experience levels can learn essential fishing skills while spending time outside with family.

The event is designed to introduce children to fishing in a welcoming environment while encouraging families to explore one of the county’s popular regional parks.

Teaching the Basics of Fishing to the Next Generation

Throughout the morning, participants will rotate through interactive teaching stations led by local fishing experts. Each station focuses on fundamental techniques that help beginners gain confidence and develop skills they can use for years to come.

Children attending the Williamson County Learn to Fish event will have the opportunity to learn:

  • How to properly cast a fishing line
  • Knot-tying techniques used by anglers
  • Responsible fishing practices
  • How to be a good steward of local waterways

Fishing poles and tackle will be provided, allowing families to simply show up and participate without needing to bring equipment.

Organizers encourage families to arrive early and allow at least an hour or more to fully experience the program and move through the educational stations.

Encouraging Outdoor Exploration for Families in Williamson County

County leaders say the event is about more than just learning a hobby — it’s about helping families reconnect with nature and with each other.

Precinct 2 Commissioner Cynthia Long said the event offers an opportunity for children to build lifelong memories outdoors.

“I hope the Learn to Fish event will inspire families to spend quality time with children discovering the outdoors and engaging in the lifetime recreational activity of fishing,” Long said.

By introducing fishing in a structured, educational setting, county officials hope young residents will feel more confident exploring parks, lakes, and outdoor spaces throughout Williamson County.

What Families Should Know Before Attending

The Learn to Fish event in Leander is free and open to the public, and no pre-registration is required.

Upon arriving at Southwest Williamson County Regional Park, all participants are asked to stop by the registration table to receive materials needed for the teaching stations.

To help children stay comfortable during the outdoor event, organizers recommend bringing:

  • Loose, comfortable clothing
  • A hat or visor for sun protection
  • Closed-toed shoes
  • Sunscreen and insect repellent

Because the program takes place outdoors in the spring weather, these items can help ensure a more enjoyable experience.

A Community Event Made Possible Through Local Support

The Williamson County Learn to Fish program is funded through donations from private individuals and corporations, highlighting the strong community support behind outdoor education initiatives.

Events like this are part of the county’s broader effort to promote healthy, family-friendly recreation across its parks system while helping young residents develop a lasting appreciation for nature.

Families interested in learning more about the event can contact the Williamson County Parks Department at 512-943-1920 or the office of Precinct 2 Commissioner Cynthia Long at 512-260-4280.

As spring unfolds across Central Texas, the event offers a simple invitation to local families: grab a hat, head to the park, and give fishing a try.
