For Williamson County residents with old paint cans, leftover pesticides, automotive fluids or household chemicals taking up space in a garage or shed, an upcoming cleanup event will offer a chance to dispose of those materials safely and close to home.

Williamson County and WM, formerly known as Waste Management, will host a household hazardous waste cleanup event from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Williamson County Central Maintenance Facility, 3151 S.E. Inner Loop in Georgetown. The event is open only to Williamson County residents. 

The collection gives households across Georgetown, Round Rock, Hutto, Taylor, Jarrell, Liberty Hill, Leander and other Williamson County communities an opportunity to safely remove materials that should not simply be placed in regular household trash.

What Williamson County Residents Can Bring

The Oct. 17 household hazardous waste collection will accept several common items that can accumulate around homes over time.

Residents may bring automotive materials and batteries, including antifreeze, batteries, brake fluid and transmission fluid.

Household chemicals such as acids, cleaning products and lighter fluid will also be accepted, along with lawn and garden chemicals including pesticides, herbicides and similar products.

Residents can dispose of paints, solvents and varnish, although Williamson County has set a limit of 5 gallons of paint per vehicle.

Aluminum will also be accepted during the event. 

What Will Not Be Accepted

Residents should check their loads carefully before leaving home because several types of materials cannot be dropped off during the Williamson County hazardous waste event.

Agricultural chemicals, asbestos, dioxins and radioactive materials will not be accepted.

The event also will not accept ammunition, fireworks or compressed gases.

Appliances, tires, propane cylinders and smoke detectors are excluded, as are pharmaceuticals, medical items and waste generated by businesses. 

That distinction is important for residents doing a major garage, shed or home cleanup. Not every item considered difficult to throw away qualifies for this particular collection.

How to Prepare Before Heading to Georgetown

A little preparation at home could make the drop-off process easier and help residents transport potentially hazardous products safely.

Williamson County asks participants to bring products in their original containers whenever possible. Items should be separated and grouped before arrival, and containers need to be properly sealed to prevent leaks.

Different products should not be mixed or consolidated into the same container.

Hazardous materials should also be placed in the back of the vehicle and kept away from passengers while being transported to the collection site. 

Residents using bins or baskets to organize materials should keep in mind that those containers will not be returned after the materials are unloaded.

Drivers Stay in Their Vehicles During Drop-Off

The Oct. 17 event will operate as a vehicle-based collection.

Volunteers will unload the hazardous materials, and attendees are asked to remain inside their vehicles throughout the process.

Each vehicle may pass through the collection line only once. Walk-up participants will not be allowed, and smoking is prohibited.

Trailers longer than 16 feet also will not be permitted. 

County officials are advising residents that long wait times are possible, so participants may want to plan extra time into their Saturday morning or early afternoon.

Why Household Hazardous Waste Collection Matters

Household hazardous waste can present a disposal challenge because many of these products require handling that differs from everyday garbage.

Williamson County says it and WM hold household hazardous waste collection days twice a year for county residents. The county also notes that household hazardous waste is not accepted at the Hutto Recycling Center, making scheduled collection events an important disposal option for residents outside cities that may offer their own programs. 

For homeowners who have been putting off that garage or storage-room cleanup because they did not know what to do with old chemicals, fluids or paint, the Oct. 17 event provides a specific place and time to tackle the job.
