Westpark Tollway Mobility Study: Have Your Say in Shaping the Future of Transportation
As one of the most innovative transportation corridors in the nation, the Westpark Tollway has been a leader in efficiency and connectivity for years, from being the first all-electronic tollway in the country to expanding more than 20 miles across Harris and Fort Bend Counties. Now, with more than 400,000 new residents in the region and continued growth on the horizon, the Harris County Toll Road Authority (HCTRA), in partnership with METRO, the City of Houston, and Fort Bend County, has launched a new study to reimagine the future of the Westpark Tollway for decades to come.
This groundbreaking study is about more than just addressing current challenges — it’s about shaping a sustainable, community-focused corridor that will enhance safety, improve traffic flow, and accommodate alternative transportation options like biking, walking, and public transit. The key goal is to create a Westpark Tollway that’s not just a road, but a vibrant, accessible transportation solution that supports local communities and grows with the region.
A Vision for the Future
The Westpark Tollway Mobility Study covers a stretch from South Gessner Road, just east of the Sam Houston Tollway, to FM 1093/FM 359/Main Street in Fulshear. This area also includes the planned extension of the tollway to Fulshear. The study will take place over several phases, with the current focus on analysis, assessments, and community engagement. This will carry through 2025 and into 2026, with the final implementation phase scheduled to begin in late 2025 or early 2026.
Key components of the study include:
-
Safety and Access: Enhancing safety for all travelers while providing better access to schools, jobs, healthcare, and public transportation.
-
Community Building and Placemaking: Creating and improving public spaces to connect communities, not divide them.
-
Sustainability and Resiliency: Planning for the long term with environmental protections and solutions that can withstand future challenges like extreme weather events.
-
Mobility and Alternative Transportation: Exploring ways to integrate biking, walking, and public transit to improve accessibility and accommodate future growth.
“We’re looking at ways to reduce congestion, improve safety, and create a more sustainable, community-focused tollway,” said one of the study's partners. "We want this to be a corridor that benefits everyone, and we’re committed to working together with the community to find the best solutions.”
Why We Need Your Feedback
What makes this study unique is the emphasis on community involvement. The Harris County Toll Road Authority and its partners are actively seeking feedback from residents, commuters, and business owners along the Westpark Tollway Corridor. Through surveys, public meetings, and interactive maps, you can share your thoughts and ideas to help shape the future of the tollway.
“Whether you’re a resident, business owner, or daily commuter, your feedback matters,” said Dina Barrish, a spokesperson for HCTRA. “This is your opportunity to tell us what’s working, what isn’t, and how we can improve the tollway to better serve everyone.”
The study team is eager to hear from those who use the tollway daily, especially regarding concerns like traffic flow, safety, and even beautification. Your input will help the study partners make the best recommendations for the future of the Westpark Tollway Corridor.
