Volunteer with Harris County ESD 48's Rehabilitation Division to Support Our First Responders

August 08 2024

Harris County ESD 48 is calling on community members to step up and volunteer for its Rehabilitation Division (RH3). The division, which focuses on providing vital support for firefighters and emergency responders at extended emergency scenes, is seeking well-motivated, positive individuals who can work effectively with first responders in a variety of challenging environments.

Rehabilitation Division's primary task is providing physical rehabilitation and rehydration services to emergency personnel working hard on the front lines of major fires, emergencies, and natural disasters. The division's team turns out with its specialized Rehab 3 unit, a truck equipped with everything needed to serve those who work tirelessly protecting and serving our community during emergencies.

Several members of RH3 responding to the scene of a residential fire on July 4th that resulted from
fireworks discarded in the garage. The RH3 team provided cooling towels, hydration and snacks to firefighters
from several departments. Fortunately, all residents of the home were able to evacuate, and no injuries were reported. (Source: RH3)

The division focuses on incidents where firefighters and emergency responders' health and safety may be at risk due to the nature, duration of the incident, or adverse weather conditions. Services provided by the Rehab Division include offering shelter, warm blankets, hot and cold beverages, and a place to warm up in winter or cool off in summer. The Rehab 3 unit even comes equipped with an onboard restroom for use at scenes where no public facilities are available.

The Rehab team, led by Captain Lou Fabricant and Lieutenant Tom Hurley, is composed of dedicated community volunteers providing these essential services. The team ensures that first responders can remain effective and healthy, even under the most challenging circumstances.

This is an excellent opportunity for community members to play an integral part in supporting first responders and ultimately the wider community.
