A Weekend of BBQ, Raffles, and Community Fun
Participants will compete in four categories: one chicken half, eight pork spareribs, eight slices of brisket, and beans (open, no desserts). Those interested in participating can find entry forms, turn-in times, and official IBCA rules at vfw8905.org.
In addition to the BBQ competition, attendees can enjoy various fundraising events, including a 50/50 raffle, cake bake sale, meat raffle, and liquor wagon raffle. A silent auction will take place from 10:00 AM to 3:30 PM, followed by a live auction and awards ceremony at 5:00 PM. Food will be available for purchase throughout the event, with brisket plates for $15 and pork sandwiches for $8.

Supporting Veterans and the Cypress Community
Founded in August 1944, VFW Post 8905 has long been a vital source of support for veterans and the Cypress community. As part of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) organization, the post is committed to assisting veterans, advocating for their rights, and providing essential services such as VA benefits counseling, financial assistance, and morale-boosting events for returning service members. These initiatives are made possible through community-driven fundraisers, including the Semi-Annual BBQ Cook-Off.
The VFW, established in 1899, is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that those who served in overseas conflicts receive the support, benefits, and recognition they deserve. Through a nationwide network of posts, the organization provides mental health resources, emergency assistance, and outreach programs to combat veterans and their families.
Beyond its advocacy and support initiatives, VFW Post 8905 plays an active role in community engagement, hosting monthly bingo nights, fish fries, steak nights, and live TAS wrestling matches at the Cypress VFW Arena. The post also organizes annual events such as chili cook-offs, cornhole competitions, and holiday celebrations, strengthening ties between veterans and the local community.
During times of crisis, VFW Post 8905 has served as a refuge for those in need. Following the devastating Derecho Storm in May 2024, which left over one million residents in the Greater Houston Area without power due to hurricane-force winds of up to 100 mph, the post partnered with the American Red Cross to provide emergency shelter, cots, and essential supplies to affected residents.

Additionally, the post offers hall rentals for events such as dances, graduation parties, birthdays, baby showers, concerts, and meetings. The facility includes a kitchen, ample parking, pool tables, shuffleboard, darts, and a jukebox.
