Veteran Loan Fund Launches Business Accelerator in Texas to Support Veteran and Military Spouse Entrepreneurs

Austin  /  Austin
April 08 2026

For many Veteran and Military Spouse entrepreneurs in Texas, access to funding and business support can often determine whether an idea becomes a sustainable livelihood. A newly launched initiative is aiming to change that—bringing not just capital, but long-term guidance and opportunity into local communities.

The Veteran Loan Fund (VLF) has officially launched its Veteran & Military Spouse Business Accelerator, a national program designed to help military-connected entrepreneurs start, grow, and scale businesses. With Texas already accounting for nearly 20% of the organization’s impact, the program is expected to resonate strongly across regions like Austin, Houston, and beyond, where Veteran-owned small businesses play a growing role in local economies.

Expanding Opportunity for Texas Veterans and Military Families

The Accelerator is supported by the Truist Foundation through a grant to PeopleFund, a Texas-based nonprofit and Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) that serves as VLF’s managing member. Together, these organizations are building on a model that blends funding with hands-on business support—an approach that has already delivered measurable results nationwide.

Since 2021, the Veteran Loan Fund has raised approximately $30 million, leveraging those resources into more than $110 million in small business loans for over 1,500 Veteran and Military Spouse entrepreneurs. That effort has supported roughly 8,000 jobs, including a significant share in Texas.

“This Accelerator builds on the strong foundation created through the Veteran Loan Fund,” said Gustavo Lasala, President and CEO of PeopleFund. “By combining capital, coaching, and a national network of partners, we are creating a more effective pathway for Veteran and Military Spouse entrepreneurs to launch, grow, and scale successful businesses.”

What the Business Accelerator Offers

The Veteran & Military Spouse Business Accelerator is designed to remove common barriers that entrepreneurs face—particularly access to capital and business education.

Participants will complete a free, eight-week program that includes:

  • Weekly business instruction and structured assignments
  • One-on-one coaching with experienced advisors
  • Financial training and capital readiness support
  • Marketing and operational guidance
  • Access to LivePlan, a professional business planning and forecasting platform

Those who complete the program gain access to substantial follow-up support, including:

  • Up to $350,000 in affordable loan capital
  • Grants ranging from $3,000 to $5,000
  • Up to three years of ongoing technical assistance
  • Complimentary access to the Business Beyond Battlefield Conference at the National Medal of Honor Museum in Arlington, Texas in October 2026

The program is delivered in collaboration with veteran-focused organizations, including the University of Texas at Arlington Veterans Business Outreach Center (UTAVBOC) and the Veteran Women’s Enterprise Center (VWEC), which lead curriculum development and training.

Veteran-Owned Businesses by the Numbers

Across the United States, Veteran-owned businesses remain a significant part of the economic landscape. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are approximately 1.9 million Veteran-owned businesses in the United States. Data from the U.S. Small Business Administration indicates these businesses employ millions of Americans and generate hundreds of billions—often cited at over $1 trillion—in annual revenue. Federal data also shows Veterans are more likely than non-veterans to be self-employed, reflecting a long-standing connection between military service and entrepreneurship.

These figures help illustrate why targeted programs like the Veteran & Military Spouse Business Accelerator can have a meaningful ripple effect—not only supporting individual business owners, but strengthening local economies and job markets.

Why This Matters for Local Communities

Programs like this often extend beyond individual entrepreneurs—they influence job creation, neighborhood stability, and long-term economic growth.

PeopleFund, which has been serving Texas communities since 1994, brings decades of experience in supporting small businesses, particularly for individuals of low to moderate income. Through more than 6,000 loans and New Market Tax Credit allocations, the organization has contributed over $1.4 billion in economic impact and helped create or retain more than 25,000 jobs.

By connecting Veterans and Military Spouses with both capital and education, the Accelerator is positioned to strengthen local business ecosystems—whether that’s a startup in Austin, a family-run operation in Houston, or a growing company in a smaller Texas community.

The Truist Foundation’s involvement reflects a broader focus on building career pathways and strengthening small businesses nationwide, with investments aimed at helping communities create sustainable economic opportunities.

What Happens Next

The launch of the Accelerator marks a new phase for the Veteran Loan Fund, with ambitious goals for the coming year. The organization aims to deploy an additional $15 million in loans and up to $1.5 million in grants, supporting approximately 300 entrepreneurs and helping create or retain 1,500 jobs.

Veterans and Military Spouses in Texas interested in participating can learn more and apply through PeopleFund.

As communities across Texas continue to grow, initiatives like this highlight how targeted investment in small businesses—especially those led by Veterans and Military families—can shape not just individual success stories, but the broader economic future of the neighborhoods they serve.
