The Alamo Opens New Texas Cavaliers Education Center in San Antonio, Expanding Hands-On Learning for Thousands of Texas Students
A major new chapter in the future of Texas history education officially opened in downtown San Antonio this week as The Alamo celebrated the grand opening of the Texas Cavaliers Education Center — a project leaders say will reshape how children across Texas experience one of the state’s most iconic historic sites.
Located directly behind the historic Alamo Church, the new education center is expected to serve approximately 250,000 school-aged children each year through field trips, immersive learning programs, and virtual classroom experiences. The facility represents another milestone in the long-term Alamo Plan, a sweeping effort to preserve, restore, and reinterpret the historic battlefield and surrounding grounds for future generations.
For families, educators, and communities across Texas, the project signals more than just the opening of another museum space. It reflects a broader investment in making Texas history more accessible, interactive, and connected to modern learning.
“What a joy it is to see children now making themselves at home in this incredible space,” said Alamo Trust, Inc. President and CEO Secretary Hope Andrade. “The Texas Cavaliers Education Center will be a place where our smallest Texans can walk in the footsteps of heroes and become inspired that they, too, can make an impact that changes history.”
A Historic San Antonio Building Reimagined for Education
The Texas Cavaliers Education Center is housed inside the former Alamo Hall building, a longtime event and meeting venue that originally served as the City of San Antonio’s second fire station. Through adaptive reuse, the historic structure has been transformed into a modern educational facility while preserving ties to the city’s architectural history.
The center is the second of three new buildings planned through the Alamo Plan, an ongoing redevelopment initiative aimed at improving visitor experiences, protecting historic resources, and strengthening educational programming at the site.
The opening comes as San Antonio continues to see strong tourism and population growth, placing renewed focus on preserving the city’s cultural identity while expanding educational and public spaces.
Inside the New Texas Cavaliers Education Center
The newly opened facility was designed to create immersive, hands-on learning experiences for children of all ages.
Among its key features are safe school bus access areas, an orientation theater for field trip groups, flexible classroom spaces, and a STEAM Lab connecting Texas history to subjects such as archaeology, architecture, engineering, and physics.
One of the center’s most significant additions is its Distance Learning Studio, which will allow live educational broadcasts to schools across Texas and beyond — helping students who may never travel to San Antonio still experience lessons connected to the Alamo and Texas Revolution.
An Early Learners Hub was also created specifically for children under five, expanding educational opportunities for younger families visiting the historic site.
Outdoor learning environments further connect students to early Texas life and Indigenous agricultural practices. The grounds feature a working acequia irrigation canal, gardens growing staple crops such as corn, beans, and squash, and an horno communal oven used for traditional cooking demonstrations.
Inside the STEAM Lab, students can also explore exhibits like a detailed LEGO model recreating the Battle of the Alamo, blending history with interactive educational design.
Texas Cavaliers Help Bring the Vision to Life
The project’s namesake recognizes the Texas Cavaliers and their early financial support for the Alamo Plan.
Through a $5 million donation, the Texas Cavaliers became one of the first major organizations to help fund the transformation effort. Their support helped advance educational programming and contributed to the realization of the new center.
As Fiesta San Antonio concluded, members of the Texas Cavaliers joined Alamo leaders, educators, and community supporters for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. Remember the Alamo Foundation board member Susan Naylor participated in the ceremonial ribbon cutting, while the Walzem Elementary School choir performed “Deep In The Heart Of Texas” during the celebration.
“The Texas Cavaliers Charitable Foundation provides direct financial support to organizations that bring hope, basic necessities, resources, and resilience to children across San Antonio,” said foundation president Michael Kiolbassa. “We are proud beyond measure to help the Alamo educate future generations about the strength and sacrifice our ancestors made during the Texas Revolution, and ensure they always Remember the Alamo.”
The Alamo Plan Continues to Shape the Future of Texas History
The Education Center is part of the broader Alamo Plan led by Alamo Trust, Inc., the nonprofit organization responsible for overseeing daily operations at the historic site and guiding its long-term redevelopment.
Alamo Trust, Inc. manages one of the most visited historic destinations in Texas, welcoming more than 1.6 million visitors annually to the San Antonio landmark. The Alamo was designated a United States National Historic Landmark in 1960 and became part of Texas’ only UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2015.
The ongoing transformation effort aims to preserve the site’s nearly 300-year history while modernizing how visitors engage with it through exhibits, public spaces, education, and historical interpretation.
For many Texas families and educators, the opening of the Texas Cavaliers Education Center represents a new opportunity to connect younger generations with stories that continue to shape the identity of the state today.
What Happens Next
With the Texas Cavaliers Education Center now open, school groups and visitors will begin incorporating the new learning spaces into future field trips and educational programming throughout the year.
The opening also marks continued momentum for the Alamo Plan as additional redevelopment phases move forward in downtown San Antonio.
Community leaders say the investment reflects a growing effort to ensure Texas history remains accessible, engaging, and relevant for future generations — not only for tourists visiting the Alamo, but for students and families throughout the state.
