Vcl Lakeside Families Get an Extended Fall Break as Cy-Fair ISD Schools Close Oct. 9-16
For Cy-Fair ISD families in Vcl Lakeside, the upcoming school break is a little longer than a typical fall holiday and may bring some noticeable changes around the neighborhood.
Cy-Fair ISD students will be out of school beginning Friday, Oct. 9, which is designated as a teacher work day, school closure makeup day and student holiday. That leads directly into the district's fall break, with Oct. 12 through Oct. 16 designated as student and staff holidays. Classes are scheduled to resume Monday, Oct. 19.
That means students will be away from the classroom for 10 consecutive days when the two weekends are included, creating an extended October break that some families may use for travel while others spend more time close to home.
More Kids at Home Means a Busier Neighborhood
For residents who do not have school-age children, the break is still worth putting on the calendar.
With Cy-Fair ISD schools closed, neighbors may see more children riding bikes, playing outside or walking around the community during hours when they would normally be in class. Drivers traveling through Vcl Lakeside can help by slowing down on residential streets, watching carefully near parks, trails and intersections, and remembering that children may be outside throughout the day.
Families can also use the break as an opportunity to remind children about basic neighborhood safety, including looking both ways before crossing streets, staying aware of moving vehicles and avoiding unfamiliar vehicles or people.
Residents who remain home during the break can help simply by paying attention to what is happening around them. If a neighbor has mentioned that they will be traveling, collecting packages or mail with permission and watching for unusual activity can help keep an empty home from standing out.
Traveling for Fall Break? Precinct 4 Offers Vacation Watch
For families heading out of town, the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office offers a free Vacation Watch program that allows residents to let deputies know when their home will be temporarily unoccupied.
While residents are away, Precinct 4 deputies can patrol the area and keep a watchful eye on the property. When submitting a request, homeowners are asked to provide details such as whether lights will be left on, whether pets will remain at the home, whether an alarm system will be armed, whether anyone is authorized to enter the residence, whether vehicles will remain at the property and who should be contacted if the homeowner cannot be reached.
Residents can request a Vacation Watch by calling the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable's Office at 832-927-6230 during regular business hours or 281-376-3472 outside regular business hours. An online Vacation Watch request form is also available through the Precinct 4 website.
Precinct 4 asks residents to update the office if plans change, including changes to departure or return dates or if additional people will be entering the home while the residents are away.
Precinct 4 also recommends several additional precautions before leaving town. Residents can place lights on timers rather than leaving them on continuously, remove valuables from vehicles and consider leaving a vehicle parked in the driveway. The agency also recommends arranging for pets, identifying a trusted emergency contact and having someone house-sit when possible so the home does not appear vacant.
For homes with alarm systems, Precinct 4 advises residents to notify their alarm company about their departure and consider making the constable's office the first contact while they are away, which can help reduce the time it takes to get law enforcement to the residence. Residents can also place their mail on hold through the U.S. Postal Service while traveling.
A Little Awareness Goes a Long Way During Fall Break
Whether the week means a family trip, sleeping in, extra time at the neighborhood park or simply a quieter morning without the school-day rush, the Cy-Fair ISD fall break will temporarily change the daily rhythm around local communities.
For neighbors, that makes the week a good time for a little extra awareness. More children may be outside during the day, some homes may be empty while families travel, and normal routines may look different until school resumes Oct. 19.
For Vcl Lakeside families, a few simple preparations before the break can help make those days away from school safer and more enjoyable, whether they are spent across town or far from home.
