Tomball ISD Elementary Schools Introduce Handbell Program to Enrich Music Education
Elementary students across Tomball ISD (TISD) are ringing in a new era of music education, thanks to a unique partnership with the Houston Chamber Ringers. Through a two-year grant, the professional handbell ensemble has supplied three sets of handbells to TISD elementary schools, creating an exciting opportunity for young learners to engage in hands-on, collaborative music-making.
The initiative was launched to enhance fine arts offerings and expand access to diverse musical instruments. Handbell programs are now in place at Decker Prairie Elementary, Creekside Forest Elementary, and Tomball Elementary, joining Canyon Pointe Elementary, which has already established a successful handbell choir.
“Handbells are a unique instrument where every student plays one note, so it is extremely team-oriented,” said Paulette Tomlinson, Director of Fine Arts for Tomball ISD. “It requires students to listen and pay attention to their fellow ringers in order to know when to play their note, ultimately, creating ownership in their music.”

As part of the grant, participating teachers receive professional development from the Houston Chamber Ringers, helping them guide students in learning proper handbell technique, reading music, and performing in an ensemble.
This innovative program has already started to yield results:
-
Students are learning music reading and performance skills in a fun and engaging way.
-
The curriculum emphasizes teamwork, patience, and listening.
-
Several campuses have already performed locally and at state-level events.
In September, Canyon Pointe Elementary students took the stage at the TASA/TASB student performance in Austin, while Decker Prairie Elementary showcased their talents during a holiday concert at TISD’s Central Office. These performances reflect the growing excitement and engagement around handbells in Tomball ISD.
The shimmering tones of handbells are also encouraging a broader appreciation for fine arts in elementary education. Tomlinson added that the initiative reinforces academic and social-emotional skills that support overall student development.

As TISD continues to explore new ways to expand music programs across its schools, the success of this grant-funded handbell project provides a model for engaging students with unique, team-based music experiences.
The Benefits of Music Education
The integration of handbells into Tomball ISD’s elementary fine arts curriculum supports broader educational goals that extend well beyond the music room. According to the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA), music education plays a crucial role in boosting academic achievement, developing social-emotional skills, and enhancing overall student success.
Students who engage in structured music programs often show stronger performance in core academic subjects such as reading and math, and are more likely to graduate and pursue higher education. The teamwork required in handbell ensembles fosters discipline, time management, listening skills, and collaboration—traits that are equally valuable in and outside the classroom.
In this way, TISD’s handbell initiative does more than cultivate musical talent—it equips students with life skills that build confidence, enhance focus, and encourage creative expression. The program not only introduces students to a unique and engaging instrument, but also aligns with TMEA’s findings that early music education contributes meaningfully to long-term academic and personal growth.
