Thornton MS Wins Second Place in Stock Market Game

May 18 2022

Thornton Middle School eighth grade students Kevin Thomas and Bryon Green won second place in the state middle school division of The Stock Market Game, sponsored by the SIFMA Foundation.

The Stock Market Game is a simulation of global capital markets that invites students to dive into the world of economics, investing and personal finance. Each team begins the game with $100,000 in simulated cash to invest. How each team then invests and borrows money is determined by their strategy. Teams’ stock portfolios are measured and monitored by real-time stock market data.

Thomas and Green carefully monitored the stock market starting in September 2021. The market was volatile due to real-world supply chain issues and the COVID-19 pandemic, but Thomas and Green made solid investments in Apple, Tesla and Welltower, a healthcare infrastructure company, which helped them earn the second place finish.

“Both Kevin and Bryon took an early and conservative approach with some familiar technology business,” said Thornton CTE teacher Erica Yarger. “I’m proud of their patience and willingness to hold that position over several months to realize steady growth in their portfolio. This is our second year participating and this is a fun and dynamic tool for tying together so many of the concepts we teach in Principals of Business, Marketing and Finance. Regardless of their portfolio outcomes, I love that our students have autonomy and ownership to maximize their learning in a real business space.”

Studies have shown that The Stock Market Game improves academic performance and financial knowledge and leads to a positive influence on the financial decisions of those involved with the game.
