The Woodlands Show Chorus Thriving in 2023
The Woodlands Show Chorus has been movin’ and shakin’ this year.
In March TWSC again won its regional championship, which gives it the opportunity to compete internationally in Kansas City, MO, in October, 2024. Several performances, including the Conroe Arts Festival in March and the opening performance for the Houston Symphony’s Star-Spangled Salute at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion provided much enjoyment for the chorus and community. The only glitch was that world-renowned Director and Coach, Betty Clipman, had an accident, which took her out of the game for a few weeks this past May, but she is on the road to recovery and has been coaching the chorus and international these past several rehearsals. Fortunately, Betty has always maintained top physical condition, so her recovery is progressing quickly, and she continues to coach international competition bound and regional quartets. The chorus is very fortunate to have high level leadership backup, allowing it to move forward without a hitch.
Kerri Mauney, Associate Director, stepped in to temporarily fill the director position maintaining forward-thinking planning, energetic, precise directing and consistent music education at each rehearsal. Kerri brings her expertise as a life-long singer, long time Sweet Adeline, former chorus director, Approved Candidate Judge in the International Judging Program, Regional Education Director and award-winning quartet bass. Outside of the Sweet Adelines Organization, she played several roles in musical theater, music teacher in middle and high school, Coordinator for Positive Behavior Interventions and Support, as well as Assistant Principal.
Kerri was a charter member of The Woodlands Show Chorus when Director Betty Clipman needed a backup assistant director because of her very active world-wide chorus and quartet coaching engagements. Ms. Mauney ultimately chose TWSC for its determination and potential for success in the harmony, a cappella world.
A chat with Ms. Mauney becomes a lesson in character, moxie, chutzpah, honesty and backbone. She says that she “walks her own walk” and that she “will compromise all day long, but I won’t compromise who I am.” She says no matter the situation, she'll be true to herself and what's right or best; hypocrisy just isn't tolerable.
Ms. Mauney’s hopes for TWSC are membership expansion and diversity, strong a cappella music accomplishment, high level music education and a chorus that is successful, entertaining and fun. She sees the future TWSC as a sought-after resource for the community.
Several performances at events, ladies’ groups and gatherings in the community, as well as an annual show are lined up for the remainder of 2023, and it includes a special event. To share the joy of singing with the community, the chorus invites ladies who like to sing to Sing in the Season by attending four Monday evening rehearsals from October 2-23 to learn a song or two and sing with the entire chorus on the November 11 holiday/patriotic show to be held at the First Presbyterian Church in Conroe.
