The Picklr to Open in Cypress October 2025, Expanding Indoor Pickleball Craze in Greater Houston
A new indoor pickleball club is set to open its doors in Cypress this fall, continuing the sport’s meteoric rise across the country and expanding a growing trend in the Greater Houston area. The Picklr Cypress will celebrate its grand opening on October 4, 2025, at 8920 Barker Cypress Road, taking over the former ASI Gymnastics building just east of the Berry Center, behind Pincho, Cheater’s Creamery, and Taco Casa.
The Cypress facility marks The Picklr’s 16th location in Texas and its third in the Greater Houston Area, joining locations in Katy and The Woodlands. The chain, which now boasts nearly 100 locations across the U.S., was co-founded by Jorge Barragan and Austin Wood with the goal of building more accessible, community-driven spaces for players of all ages and skill levels.
“Somehow, we found a building space with an owner willing to lease a building for our wild pickleball idea he had never heard of,” said Barragan, recalling their first location in Utah. “Fast forward to today, and The Picklr is partners with Pickleball Inc., Super Bowl Champion Drew Brees, and has over 500 locations sold worldwide.”

A Game Built on Community, Connection, and Fun
Pickleball, often described as a mix between tennis, ping-pong, and badminton, was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington. Over the last decade, its easy-to-learn rules, light paddles, and family-friendly pace have made it the fastest-growing sport in America, attracting millions of players of all ages.
With small courts, slower balls, and shorter games, pickleball is accessible to children, adults, and seniors alike—turning neighborhoods, parks, and indoor clubs into hubs of social connection and healthy activity. Organized open play sessions, tournaments, and league play have transformed the sport from backyard fun into a community lifestyle.
After visiting a crowded rec center one winter and watching two teenagers play while 50 people waited their turn, Barragan saw the future of the sport unfolding before him.
“I realized then that the youth would eventually take over this sport. That experience inspired me to create a facility for aspiring players of all ages.”
