The Cy-Fair Women's Club: Why You Should Join

March 18 2023

By Cathy Smith, VP Membership, Cy-Fair Women's Club

If you’ve ever wanted to be part of a well-established, community service organization that values its members and its service to the community, Cy-Fair Women’s Club (CWC) may be right for you. We are a 501(c)(3) organization of women who love to serve others and have fun doing it. Last year, CWC celebrated its fortieth (40th) anniversary. We were also recognized recently by the Cy-Fair Chamber of Commerce as a 2022 Finalist for Non-Profit of the Year.

We asked some of our newest members what drew them to the club.  Here’s what several of them had to say.

Diane Spurling

Diane Spurling moved to Texas in 2021 from Illinois for her husband’s job. Not knowing anyone who lived in Texas, she wanted to go out and meet people and get involved in the community. Diane looked for an organization where she could volunteer and meet other women who shared her same values. She first learned about the CWC at our annual Shop ‘til You Drop craft show event held at the Berry Center every second Saturday in September. Diane stopped by the membership table at the event and learned about the club, as well as the many charities that we support.  She later attended her first meeting and “found exactly what I was looking for.”  She joined the club and volunteers with the Service Projects and Shop ‘til You Drop committees. When not volunteering with the CWC, Diane works as a substitute teacher for the Tomball School District, spends time with her husband Steve, and visits her three grown children.

Jackie Smith

Jackie Smith also joined the CWC in 2022. She wanted to get involved in volunteering with like-minded women who lived near her and make some new friendships.  She enjoys the “service-focused” nature of our organization. When asked what she would share with a potential new member, Jackie said that “these ladies run a professional club and are serious about helping our community and making others feel welcome and invited. There is so much potential we have as women leaders in our community to reach out and support others in need.”

Ann Liner

Ann Liner joined the club in April of 2022, after hearing about the “wonderful things that Cy-Fair Women’s Club does for our community.” While in the club, she has made new friends and participated in service projects that help our local community. As a breast cancer survivor, Ann particularly appreciates the dedication and hard work by club members that goes into making pillows for breast cancer patients.  She has been impressed that the club not only provides scholarships for Cy-Fair area seniors, but also funds other local non-profit organizations in our community. She “highly recommends” that others join the Cy-Fair Women’s Club. “We have a lot of fun while doing great things.”

In addition to asking new members about the club, we also asked one of our long-time members what she loved about the club and what keeps her coming back, year after year.

Elena McCreery

Elena McCreery originally joined the club in the 1990s after she quit working to stay home with her second child. She was looking for social opportunities in the neighborhood and liked the fact that the CWC was a service club. She stepped away when life got too busy, but rejoined in 2006 when her girls were older. Elena said that what she likes most about being a member of the Cy-Fair Women’s Club is the opportunity to give back to the community. “Each year we are able to give thousands of dollars to students for scholarships and non-profits to further their work in the community. Being able to serve on the committees that decide how our funds are distributed is very meaningful for me.”  Elena also enjoys the hands-on service opportunities that the club provides.

CWC club members also volunteer at different Cy-Fair area non-profit organizations, giving us a chance to not only give back, but work alongside friends that we have made in the club. If you’re looking for a place to use your time and talents to serve your community, please contact us or simply stop in as a guest at an upcoming meeting.

We hope you will consider joining us.
