Walmart Invests Again in Cypress: $1.1M Remodel at Walmart Neighborhood Market Barker Cypress Store Follows April Marvida Opening
Walmart is doubling down on its presence in Cypress. Just months after opening a brand-new Supercenter near the Marvida community on April 30, 2025, the retail giant has filed plans for a $1.1 million remodel of its Barker Cypress Neighborhood Market location at 11425 Barker Cypress Road, which first opened in January 2016. The renovation is scheduled to begin in early January 2026 and wrap up by early April 2026, bringing upgrades to both the sales floor and exterior of the store.
Details of the Remodel
According to a state permit filing, the Barker Cypress project will cover 7,680 square feet of space. Planned improvements include cleaning and repainting interior and exterior walls, repairing and replacing floor finishes, and demolishing and rebuilding exterior sidewalks and pavement. The store is expected to remain open to customers throughout the construction period.
A Follow-Up to the Marvida Supercenter Opening
The remodel comes on the heels of Walmart’s high-profile opening of its Marvida Walmart Supercenter at 8927 Fry Rd, Cypress, TX 77433 on April 30, 2025. That $15.2 million project introduced Cypress shoppers to Walmart’s latest “Store of the Future” model, a 203,790-square-foot space designed by BRR Architecture, Inc. to feature modern layouts, expanded product selections, and digital convenience. The store also incorporated sustainability initiatives, such as energy-efficient equipment and electric vehicle fast-charging stations, while creating hundreds of jobs for local residents.
By launching a state-of-the-art new store and now committing to a remodel of an existing location, Walmart is reinforcing its long-term investment in Cypress, one of Greater Houston’s fastest-growing communities.

What Sets Walmart Neighborhood Markets Apart
The Barker Cypress location is a Walmart Neighborhood Market, which differs from a full-scale Supercenter like the Marvida store. Neighborhood Markets are typically around 38,000 to 65,000 square feet, compared to more than 180,000 square feet for Supercenters.
These smaller-format stores are designed to provide quick, convenient shopping focused on:
-
Groceries and fresh food: Neighborhood Markets emphasize produce, meat, dairy, and household essentials.
-
Pharmacy and health services: Many locations, including Barker Cypress, feature full-service pharmacies and wellness offerings.
-
Simplified layouts: With fewer departments, these stores allow faster in-and-out shopping.
-
Local convenience: Unlike Supercenters, they typically don’t carry large general merchandise categories such as apparel, electronics, or auto centers.
For Cypress residents, this means the Marvida Supercenter offers the breadth of Walmart’s full product lineup, while the Barker Cypress Neighborhood Market remodel will enhance a store designed for everyday grocery runs and convenience shopping closer to home.
Why It Matters for Shoppers
For residents who frequent the Barker Cypress location, the remodel means a refreshed shopping experience with new finishes and infrastructure updates. While the work won’t transform the store on the same scale as the Marvida Supercenter, the improvements are part of Walmart’s nationwide initiative to remodel 650 stores and build more than 150 new ones over the next five years.
Shoppers can expect a smoother visit once the project wraps up in spring 2026, with upgrades to both the look and functionality of the store.
