SXSW 2026 Celebrates 40 Years in Austin with Music, Film, Tech and Global Creative Talent March 12–18

Austin  /  Austin
March 11 2026

Every March, Austin becomes a global gathering place for artists, filmmakers, entrepreneurs and innovators. In 2026, SXSW (South by Southwest Conference & Festivals) is marking a milestone moment — its 40th anniversary — with a week of music, film, technology and cultural programming from March 12–18, 2026.

The internationally recognized event brings thousands of visitors from around the world to the Texas capital each year, transforming downtown Austin’s theaters, music venues and creative spaces into stages for discovery. For local residents and businesses, SXSW represents both an economic boost and a chance to see Austin’s creative spirit showcased on a global stage.

Founded in 1987 in Austin, SXSW originally launched as a music festival just as the city was gaining its reputation as the Live Music Capital of the World®. Over four decades, the event expanded to include conferences, film and television premieres, startup showcases and networking events that attract professionals from across industries.

Organizers say the festival’s 40-year legacy reflects Austin’s role as a place where new ideas and emerging talent can flourish.

A Seven-Day Festival Celebrating Four Decades of Discovery

SXSW 2026 will run for seven consecutive days, bringing together the Innovation Conference, Film & TV Festival, and Music Festival simultaneously for the first time.

The condensed schedule is designed to make it easier for attendees to experience the full scope of the event. It also expands opportunities for live music fans, with seven nights of music showcases across Austin venues — one more than previous years.

Organizers say the extended music programming pays tribute to the festival’s origins while highlighting the future of music.

The event has historically served as a launchpad for artists, filmmakers and startups, with SXSW showcasing technology companies before they became household names, films from future Oscar-winning directors and thousands of musicians early in their careers.

Downtown Austin Becomes a “Pop-Up Festival Village”

Because the Austin Convention Center is currently undergoing redevelopment and expansion, SXSW 2026 will expand across multiple venues throughout downtown Austin.

Festival organizers describe the layout as a “pop-up SXSW village,” with programming aligned across nearby venues and districts.

To help attendees navigate the festival, three industry-focused Clubhouses will serve as central hubs:

  • Film & TV Clubhouse: 800 Congress Avenue near the Paramount Theatre
  • Music Clubhouse: Downright Austin
  • Innovation Clubhouse: Brazos Hall

These clubhouses will act as gathering spaces where attendees can recharge, connect with industry leaders, access information centers and explore exclusive SXSW merchandise. Organizers say the spaces are designed to help visitors orient themselves within the sprawling festival footprint.

Music Festival Showcases Global and Local Talent

Live music remains at the core of SXSW. The SXSW Music Festival will again feature performances by emerging artists and established acts from around the world.

Artists already announced for the 2026 lineup include The All-American Rejects, The Band Loula, Milo Korbenski and Grrrl Gang, alongside Austin and Texas performers such as Bayonne, Bubba Lucky and Next of Kin.

Music fans can also attend Rolling Stone’s Future of Music showcase, scheduled March 12–14 at ACL Live at the Moody Theater. The concert series highlights artists shaping the future of the industry.

Performers for the three-night event include:

  • March 12: Lola Young
  • March 13: Fuerza Regida
  • March 14: BigXThaPlug

The showcase coincides with Rolling Stone’s annual Future of Music issue, which highlights emerging artists to watch.

Film Festival Returns for Its 39th Year

The SXSW Film Festival, now in its 39th year, will once again feature film screenings, premieres, industry panels and networking events.

While the complete 2026 film lineup will be announced closer to the event, past SXSW premieres have included high-profile projects such as the comedy series “The Studio” starring Seth Rogen, Kathryn Hahn and Catherine O’Hara, the drama “On Swift Horses” with Daisy Edgar-Jones and Jacob Elordi, and the action sequel “The Accountant 2” starring Ben Affleck.

For many filmmakers, SXSW remains one of the industry’s most influential launching pads for independent cinema and television.

Conference Speakers Bring Global Perspectives

The SXSW Conference brings together leaders from technology, entertainment, journalism and public life to explore emerging trends and cultural shifts.

Featured speakers announced for 2026 include:

  • Former First Lady Michelle Obama
  • Actor and director Ben Stiller
  • Paula Kerger, President and CEO of PBS
  • Futurist Amy Webb
  • AI thought leader Ian Beacraft
  • Journalist and media strategist Jon Youshaei
  • Members of The All-American Rejects

Conference programming will begin Thursday, March 12, featuring tracks focused on Brand & Marketing, Cities & Climate, Creator Economy, Culture, Startups, Sports & Gaming, Tech & AI, and the Future of Work.

The first keynote and several co-programmed sessions with SXSW EDU will also take place on opening day.

Opening Events and Networking Kick Off the Festival

The festival’s opening celebrations will include The Crossover Day Mixer, an event where all badgeholders can gather to meet fellow attendees and kick off the week.

Additional opening parties will be held for Innovation, Film & TV, and Music badgeholders, with Platinum badgeholders receiving access to all three events.

Throughout the week, attendees will also find panel discussions, exhibitions, competitions, awards ceremonies, networking opportunities and special events across Austin.

New Badge and Reservation System for 2026

SXSW organizers have also introduced updates to the badge and reservation system to simplify the experience for attendees.

Each badge will now include advance reservations for sessions, screenings and showcases up to three weeks before the festival.

Reservation limits include:

  • Platinum badges: up to three reservations per day
  • Innovation, Film & TV, or Music badges: up to two reservations per day

Reservations will be released in timed windows to allow different badge types the opportunity to secure spots.

Attendees can still join walk-up lines for events, and real-time venue capacity will be visible through the SXSW GO mobile app, which displays event status and available seating.

Organizers also eliminated secondary badge access between festival tracks. Instead, Innovation and Film & TV badgeholders can add a Music Wristband, while limited general admission film tickets will be available one week before the festival.

Planning Your SXSW Experience

With thousands of events scheduled across Austin, organizers recommend reviewing the SXSW Attendee Guide and the Reservations and Lines Guide to plan the festival experience.

Both guides provide information on navigating venues, managing reservations and maximizing time during the busy week.

As SXSW celebrates four decades of creativity and collaboration, the festival continues to reflect Austin’s role as a hub for cultural innovation and artistic discovery.

Additional announcements — including more speakers, film premieres and music showcases — are expected in the weeks leading up to the event.
