For San Antonio-area music lovers looking for a memorable night out this summer, Summer Tales at the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts promises more than a concert—it offers an evening of musical storytelling that transports audiences across cultures, emotions and imagined worlds without ever leaving downtown.

The Orchestra San Antonio (TOSA) will take the stage on Saturday, June 6, at 7:30 p.m. in the Tobin Center's H-E-B Performance Hall for a program built around some of classical music's most recognizable and evocative works. Featuring guest conductor José Luis Gomez and acclaimed cellist Cameron Renshaw, the performance will guide audiences through tales of romance, adventure, drama and imagination through music that has captivated listeners for generations.

For residents of San Antonio and surrounding communities, the concert is another example of how the city's performing arts scene continues to provide world-class cultural experiences close to home.

A Musical Journey Through Iconic Works

The evening's program features selections from Georges Bizet's Carmen Suite No. 1 and Carmen Suite No. 2, works drawn from the composer's famous opera that remain among the most recognizable pieces in classical music. Filled with Spanish-inspired rhythms, dramatic tension and memorable melodies, the music continues to resonate with audiences nearly 150 years after its debut.

The program also includes Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme, performed by featured soloist Cameron Renshaw. Written for cello and orchestra, the piece showcases both technical brilliance and lyrical beauty, making it one of the most celebrated works in the cello repertoire.

Closing the evening is Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Scheherazade, a sweeping orchestral masterpiece inspired by the legendary One Thousand and One Nights tales. The work's vivid musical storytelling has long made it a favorite among audiences, painting scenes of adventure, mystery and romance through richly layered orchestration.

According to TOSA, Summer Tales is designed as a musical escape filled with "passion, power, and storytelling at its most dramatic," offering listeners an opportunity to experience familiar compositions in a live setting.

A Chance to Learn Before the Performance

Audience members are encouraged to arrive early for a pre-concert discussion held one hour before the performance in the Feik Family Rotunda.

These conversations with guest artists provide insights into the evening's music, creative interpretations and listening highlights, helping both longtime classical music enthusiasts and first-time concertgoers deepen their appreciation of the program.

The pre-concert discussions have become a popular feature of many performances at the Tobin Center, creating an accessible entry point for audiences interested in learning more about the works they are about to hear.

The Orchestra San Antonio's Community Mission

Founded with a focus on education, collaboration and artistic excellence, The Orchestra San Antonio has become an important part of the city's cultural landscape.

Beyond its independent concert series, TOSA regularly partners with organizations including OPERA San Antonio, Ballet San Antonio and 100A Productions to bring a wide variety of performances to local audiences.

That collaborative approach has helped expand access to orchestral music throughout the region while strengthening connections among San Antonio's arts organizations.

For many residents, performances like Summer Tales offer an opportunity to experience internationally recognized works performed by accomplished musicians in a local setting, reinforcing San Antonio's growing reputation as a destination for arts and culture.

A Downtown Landmark for the Arts

Hosting the performance is the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts, one of San Antonio's most recognizable cultural destinations.

Situated along the San Antonio River Walk, the venue transformed the historic Municipal Auditorium into a modern performing arts center while preserving the building's iconic exterior. Since opening in 2014, the Tobin Center has welcomed audiences for concerts, theatrical productions, comedy performances, dance presentations, family programming and community events.

The concert will take place in the H-E-B Performance Hall, a flexible 1,738-seat venue known for its adjustable acoustics and ability to accommodate a wide variety of performances. The center also includes the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater and the outdoor Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza, creating a performing arts campus that serves residents and visitors year-round.

The Tobin Center's development was the result of a major public-private partnership involving Bexar County, the City of San Antonio and philanthropic supporters, reflecting the community's long-term investment in arts and culture.

Today, the venue continues to play a significant role in downtown revitalization while providing a gathering place where residents can experience performances ranging from local productions to internationally recognized artists.
