Jaeho Lee, a talented math prodigy from Spring Branch Academic Institute at Stratford High School, is setting the stage for a mathematical revolution with the launch of a math club exclusively for elementary school students. This initiative aligns with the school district's priority of promoting literacy, with mathematics being a crucial component.

In its’ second year, Lee's math club, which convenes every Thursday at Thornwood Elementary School, aims to cultivate a love for mathematics and challenge young students to think critically and logically. “I want to makes a difference in other people's lives,” said Lee, highlighting his motivation behind the club.

Inspired by the successful math club at his high school, Lee understands the significance of introducing elementary students to unique mathematical concepts at an early age. He recognizes the importance of exploring advanced mathematics early on and firmly believes in the power of peer mentorship.

“Mathematics not only plays a central role in understanding most sciences but also helps in developing logical skills,” explained Lee. “I encourage students to think critically about the problems they're solving and ensure that every step makes logical sense. This way of thinking benefits students not only in mathematics but also in subjects like physics, chemistry, and writing.”

During the club's weekly hour-long meetings, Lee and his team of volunteer students from Spring Branch Academic Institute deliver lectures and engage the participants in problem-solving activities. Each club member receives a handout and a specific topic of focus for the meeting, allowing them to practice and apply what they learn.

Lee receives valuable support from various teachers at SBAI and Stratford High School in planning and acquiring the necessary materials for the club. His ultimate goal is to instill a love for mathematics. Currently, the club has a membership of around 12 students from Thornwood Elementary School and six dedicated SBAI volunteers.

Looking ahead, Lee envisions expanding the club to include additional elementary schools, ensuring that more students can maximize their potential with the added benefit of a student mentors. He is even contemplating the idea of initiating math clubs at other schools or expanding the existing club to include fourth graders.

“Through mentoring students in math, I hope to elevate the level of mathematics at Spring Forest Middle and Stratford High School, as well as SBISD at large,” shared Lee, demonstrating his dedication to giving back and creating opportunities for others.

Lee's unwavering dedication to empowering young minds and nurturing a deep-rooted love for mathematics serves as a shining example of the possibilities that students in SBISD possess. Moreover, his actions perfectly embody the Core Characteristics of a T-2-4 Ready Graduate. With individuals like Jaeho Lee leading the way, the future is limitless.
