Spring ISD Names Interim Athletic Director Derrell Oliver as New Director of Athletics
Spring ISD has named Interim Athletic Director Darrell Oliver as its next Director of Athletics.
With 20 years of coaching experience, Oliver has an extensive background in leadership and athletics. He began his career as the ninth-grade coordinator and head football coach at Richardson Junior High In 2004. He went on in Richardson to serve in roles as Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, Head Football Coach, Head Track/Cross Country Coach, Head Golf Coach and Assistant Head Baseball Coach.
“While a national search yielded dozens of qualified candidates, Coach Oliver was the clear choice to lead our athletic programs and build on the foundation of excellence,” said Spring ISD Superintendent Dr. Lupita Hinojosa. “He has played a pivotal role in developing that foundation over the past 2½ years – both as Assistant and Interim Athletic Director. This year alone, we have cheered on all three of our High Schools’ cross country and football teams to the playoffs – with Westfield High School reaching the state quarterfinals!”
Oliver’s overall success as a head coach includes three District championships, one Area championship, two coach of the year awards, five consecutive Regional finals appearances and three trips to State across multiple sports. In addition to his head-coaching experience, he has also served as a top athletic consultant for several years working indirectly with the NCAA, College Conference Commissioners and assisting student athletes with recruiting and overall player development. In addition to his experience in education, he has an additional 14 years of success in various corporate leadership roles at Hewlett-Packard and NASA.
“I am so excited to take on this role – not only in leading a phenomenal coaching and athletic staff, but in gaining the opportunity to positively impact students and families,” Oliver said. “Our athletic programs have a direct impact on developing successful young men and women, and I am so fortunate to be in a position to help lead that work.”
