Shop, Save, Give Back: Support Local Charities and Stretch Your Dollar

August 15 2022

Have you ever shopped at a resale store before? Or perhaps it's been a while since you have? Most resale shops sell gently used items at bargain prices, giving shoppers a wide selection of unique merchandise they might not find elsewhere. For many shoppers, it can feel much like a treasure hunt. You never know what you will find since inventory and product sources change all the time.

One of the greatest benefits to shopping at resale stores is that shoppers can usually make their dollar stretch much farther than they typically can at retail stores. There are often major name brands, even luxury brands, at a fraction of the cost they once were at full retail. With a quick wash cycle, wipe-down or dusting, resale items can be good as new without the heavier cost of purchasing brand new. Shopping at resale stores helps you keep more money in your pocket for other essential life expenses like groceries, school supplies and utility bills.

In addition to great prices, resale stores offer a way for consumers to practice a form of sustainable shopping. When purchasing goods at a resale shops, customers contribute to the reduction of textile and materials waste. By giving a new purpose to an item that otherwise might have gone in the trash, consumers can contribute to less waste in landfills.

For those who love to give new meaning to everyday items or repurpose furniture or home goods, resale shops are a fantastic source for items that have good bones but could benefit from a little TLC. A fresh coat of paint on a mirror or a new fabric covering on a chair can make a previously owned piece look and feel like brand new.

But some resale stores take a big step beyond these benefits. Rooted in mission to serve their local communities, these resale shops are actually run by local charitable organizations, using proceeds from their stores to fund impactful programs that benefit members of your community who are in need. From rent assistance to food pantries, or counseling services to educational programs, these charitable organizations are making a difference where you live on a grassroots level. When you shop at these stores, you support your local community by helping to fund their missions. Shopping for a cause - it doesn't get much better than that.

The next time you set out to shop for clothes or household items, stop by one of these resale shops. You never know what you will find but you will always know that you're giving back with every purchase.
