Shipley Donut Dash Returns to Sam Houston Race Park With Donuts, Family Races and a Mission to Fight Childhood Hunger
A Houston tradition built around two things the city knows well — Shipley Do-Nuts and neighbors helping neighbors — will return this fall with an even bigger goal.
Registration is now open for the 2026 Shipley Donut Dash, a family-friendly Houston running event scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, at Sam Houston Race Park. The morning will include a 10K, 5K and kids dash, with a portion of registration proceeds benefiting Kids’ Meals and its work to fight childhood hunger across Greater Houston.
For families searching for fall races in Houston, charity runs near Houston or kid-friendly weekend events, the Donut Dash offers a lighthearted way to spend a Saturday morning while supporting a serious community need.
Kids’ Meals currently delivers more than 13,000 free, healthy meals each weekday directly to the homes of food-insecure preschool-aged children throughout Greater Houston. The nonprofit also works with families to connect them with resources intended to help break the cycle of poverty.
Shipley Donut Dash Race Schedule and Event Details
The 2026 Donut Dash will begin at 7 a.m. with the 10K race. The 5K will follow at 8 a.m., and the kids dash will close out the races at 9:45 a.m.
Each participant will receive a donut-inspired race shirt and a new donut-themed finisher medal. Complimentary Shipley donuts will also be served, giving runners something sweet to look forward to after crossing the finish line.
Along the course and during the post-race celebration, participants can enjoy Shipley donuts and mini kolaches. Shipley’s new cold brew coffee will also be available after the races while supplies last.
The combination of competitive distances, a children’s race and post-race treats is designed to make the Donut Dash accessible to experienced runners, casual walkers and families looking for an active Houston event they can enjoy together.
“After the incredible response to the Shipley Donut Dash in 2025, we're bringing this event back bigger this fall,” Shipley Donuts CEO Flynn Dekker said. “What started as a fun, community race has quickly evolved into a meaningful event rallying our hometown around the fight against food insecurity. This year, we're building upon the momentum to deepen our impact, engage more participants and continue to support Kids' Meals' mission to feed preschoolers in Houston.”
Last Year’s Race Drew More Than 1,500 Participants
The 2025 Shipley Donut Dash attracted more than 1,500 runners from across the Houston area, according to event organizers. That turnout helped generate support for Kids’ Meals while establishing the event as more than an ordinary themed race.
For the 2026 event, Shipley Donuts and Adrenaline Special Events will donate a portion of all registration fees to Kids’ Meals. The nonprofit says every $2 donated can provide one healthy meal for a child.
The contribution comes at a time when Kids’ Meals continues expanding its reach. Founded in 2006 with two vans serving children in two ZIP codes, the Houston nonprofit has grown into the nation’s only free home-delivery meal program focused specifically on food-insecure preschool-aged children.
The organization has now delivered more than 20 million meals during its two decades of service to Houston-area families.
“Childhood hunger continues to affect thousands of families across Houston, and this community's generosity keeps stepping up to meet that need,” Kids’ Meals CEO Beth Braniff Harp said. “We're proud to stand alongside Shipley Donuts again this fall as the Donut Dash grows into one of Houston's most impactful charitable events, moving us closer to a hunger-free future for the children who need it most.”
A Houston Donut Brand Gives Back to Its Hometown
Shipley Donuts has deep roots in Houston, making the partnership a natural fit for an event centered on local identity and community support.
The company traces its history to 1936, when Lawrence Shipley Sr. developed his recipe for hot, handcrafted do-nuts. After initially selling them wholesale for five cents a dozen, the Shipley family opened its first Houston shop in the mid-1940s.
Over the decades, Shipley became closely associated with Houston mornings, family breakfasts and boxes of glazed donuts brought to workplaces, schools and community gatherings. The Houston-based company now operates more than 390 franchised and company-owned locations, while continuing to make its donuts fresh daily.
Its menu has grown to include more than 60 donut varieties, including the brand’s signature plain glazed donut, filled and iced donuts, cake donuts, bear claws, kolaches and coffee.
That hometown history gives the Donut Dash a personal connection for many Houston residents. The event takes something familiar — a weekend box of Shipley donuts — and turns it into an opportunity to help provide meals for children who may not know where their next one is coming from.

Registration for the Shipley Donut Dash is available through RunSignup. The event will take place Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026, at Sam Houston Race Park.
Residents who cannot attend the race but still want to support the cause may donate directly to Kids’ Meals.
