Service Dogs, Inc. Partners with Harris County Pets to Transform Shelter Dogs into Service Dogs

March 27 2024

Harris County Pets recently announced its partnership with Service Dogs, Inc., a collaboration that brings together two organizations with a unifying mission: to transform the lives of both pets and humans, and in doing so, better our community.

Service Dogs, Inc., a Texas-based organization established over three decades ago, has been making remarkable strides in rescuing and transforming shelter dogs into service dogs. This organization's work is a testament to the incredible capacity of dogs to provide aid and companionship to humans in need.

Founded in 1988 by Sheri Soltes, Service Dogs, Inc. has spent 35 years committed to converting unwanted dogs into lifelines for Texans facing significant challenges. These challenges range from mobility issues, deafness, trauma victims requiring court support, to aiding first responders' resilience. All these initiatives are underpinned by Service Dogs, Inc.'s dedication to positive reinforcement training methods.

Since their inception, Service Dogs, Inc. has developed several specialities that yield tailored training programs for service dogs, providing crucial support for individuals with spinal cord injuries, child victims in court, and first responders facing high suicide rates. Their upcoming 2024 initiative includes a Veterans Training Program to offer therapeutic experiences for veterans while providing a new home for dogs.

Harris County Pets, a municipal animal shelter serving the residents of unincorporated Harris County, shares this same spirit of service. Committed to accepting every animal that comes through its doors, the organization receives an average of 16,000 - 20,000 animals annually. Since 2012, they have steadily increased their live release rate to 97.7% in 2023. This partnership aims to forge a unique - and vital - path to pet ownership that gives pets who are seeking a fresh start a whole new purpose that's life changing for their companion, and for them.

In a statement from Harris County Pets, they expressed their excitement about the partnership, saying “Together, we're looking forward to seeing our furry friends embark on new adventures and make a real difference in the lives of those in need. Thank you, Service Dogs Inc., for your dedication and partnership!”

The journey of transforming lives through the connection between dogs and humans continues, and with this new partnership, even more lives will be touched and improved.
