San Antonio River Walk to Turn Green for 2026 St. Patrick’s River Parades and Festivities

March 06 2026

Each spring, one of Texas’ most recognizable destinations takes on a striking shade of emerald, drawing visitors from across the state and beyond. On March 14–15, 2026, the San Antonio River Walk will once again turn bright green as part of the annual St. Patrick’s River Parades and Celebrations, a tradition that has become one of the most beloved St. Patrick’s Day events in Texas.

Organized by Visit San Antonio River Walk Operations and the Harp & Shamrock Society of Texas, the weekend celebration blends Irish cultural traditions, live entertainment, river parades, family activities, and community gatherings along the historic downtown waterways.

For locals and neighboring Texans planning spring travel, weekend getaways, or St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, the San Antonio River Walk Green River Dyeing event offers a festive way to experience one of the state’s most unique holiday traditions.

A Texas Tradition Since 1969

The vibrant green transformation of the San Antonio River Walk dates back more than five decades. Since 1969, organizers have kicked off St. Patrick’s celebrations by dyeing the river a brilliant emerald color using 25 gallons of eco-friendly dye, symbolically mirroring Ireland’s famed River Shannon.

The spectacle has grown into a signature Texas event that blends Irish heritage with San Antonio’s distinctive cultural flair. Crowds gather along the River Walk each year to watch the river gradually change color, creating a memorable backdrop for a full weekend of festivities.

For many visitors and locals alike, the moment the water turns green marks the official start of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in San Antonio.

When the River Walk Turns Green

The River Walk Dyeing takes place multiple times during the weekend to give visitors opportunities to witness the transformation.

Sunday, March 15, 2026
  • 1:00–3:00 PM – River Walk Dyeing (Downtown starting at Mad Dogs)

Watching the river shift into a vivid emerald hue is one of the most photographed moments of the celebration and remains a highlight for visitors exploring St. Patrick’s Day events on the San Antonio River Walk.
