San Antonio Hispanic Heritage Month 2026 Brings Fiestas Patrias, Music, Film and Family Events Across the City
San Antonio’s connection to Hispanic and Latino heritage is woven into the city’s neighborhoods, music, food, art and history. Over the next several weeks, residents will have dozens of opportunities to experience that heritage together as Hispanic Heritage Month and Fiestas Patrias bring celebrations, performances and educational programs to locations across San Antonio.
Observed nationally from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, Hispanic Heritage Month honors the histories, cultures and contributions of Hispanic and Latino communities. In San Antonio, the observance carries particular local meaning because of the city’s longstanding cultural and historical relationship with Mexico. Mexico’s independence movement began Sept. 16, 1810, when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla issued the call that helped launch the fight for independence from Spain.
For San Antonio families, that history will be told not only through ceremonies, but also through parades, mariachi music, charreada, dance, movies, art, literature and programs in parks and libraries.
Fiestas Patrias 2026 Begins With a Big Weekend in San Antonio
Some of this year’s largest Fiestas Patrias events arrive Saturday, Sept. 12, giving residents an early start to the monthlong celebration.
Historic Market Square will host the El Grito Cultural Program & Civic Ceremony, presented by the Consulate General of Mexico in San Antonio. Also on Sept. 12, the 45th Annual Dieciséis de Septiembre Parade, presented by Avenida Guadalupe Association, will begin near Brazos Street and Guadalupe Street.
The weekend continues Sept. 12-13 with the Fiestas Patrias Celebration, presented by LULAC 648 at Historic Market Square.
The events are part of a broader Fiestas Patrias program coordinated with the Diez y Seis de Septiembre Commission, which was established in 1994 to help San Antonio commemorate Mexico’s Independence Day and promote an understanding of its historical importance. The commission includes members appointed by the mayor and City Council as well as representatives of local cultural organizations.
That community focus is part of what makes Hispanic Heritage Month in San Antonio distinctive. These are not simply performances on a calendar; many are rooted in traditions, organizations and gathering places that have been part of local families’ lives for generations.
Mariachi, Charreada and Cultural Traditions Continue Through October

On Sept. 17 and 18, the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center will present Celebrando Tradiciones: Corazón y Raíz at the Carver Community Cultural Center.
The San Antonio Charro Association will host the Diez y Seis Charreada at San Antonio Charro Ranch on Sept. 19, bringing another longstanding Mexican cultural tradition into the celebration.
October brings two more signature events on Oct. 10. LULAC Council 4947 will present the Mariachi Festival at the Arneson River Theatre, while the Avenida Guadalupe Association will host Fiesta Alegria at Plaza Guadalupe.
Together, the lineup offers several ways for residents to experience Mexican and Mexican American culture through music, performance, community gatherings and traditions that remain closely tied to San Antonio’s identity.
San Antonio Hispanic Heritage Month Events Go Beyond Fiestas Patrias
City departments are also hosting Hispanic Heritage Month programs for residents of different ages and interests.
Moviegoers can head to Mission Marquee Plaza for the Outdoor Family Film Series, with “La Bamba” on Sept. 17 and “Selena” on Sept. 19.
At San Antonio Public Library’s Central Library, the From Argentine to American – A Hispanic Heritage Month Progressive Dance Experience will run Sept. 19-26.
The library system is also offering a larger slate of Hispanic Heritage Month programming, including Del Corazón: An Oral History Project, Dissecting the Westside Sound, Besos and Books Vol. 2: Celebrating Queer Latinx Romance, and Raza Cósmica: A Constellation of Latinx Sci-Fi Cinema. Those programs broaden the celebration beyond traditional festival settings, creating opportunities to explore Hispanic and Latino experiences through oral history, music, books, film and dance.
Parks and Community Centers Join the Celebration
San Antonio Parks & Recreation will offer a Hispanic Heritage Month Art Program at participating community centers from Sept. 21 through Oct. 16.
The department is also incorporating cultural programming into outdoor and nature-based activities, including Starting Out Wild: Coyotes and Bilingual Natural Areas Loteria.
For families looking for Hispanic Heritage Month activities in San Antonio, the range of locations means residents do not necessarily have to head to a single downtown festival to participate. Libraries, parks, community centers and cultural venues are all part of the citywide schedule.
Centro de Artes Marks 10 Years With Mercado/Material
The official Hispanic Heritage Month calendar closes with another milestone on Oct. 15, when the City of San Antonio Department of Arts & Culture presents the opening reception for Mercado/Material at Centro de Artes.
The event also comes as Centro de Artes celebrates its 10th anniversary, adding another layer of local arts history to this year’s observance.
San Antonio’s broader fall cultural calendar is particularly busy this year, with the city describing Hispanic Heritage Month and Fiestas Patrias as part of a season filled with festivals, performances and cultural experiences across multiple neighborhoods and venues.
