Parisina Coming to San Antonio, Taking Over Former JoAnn Fabrics Store Near North Star Mall
The former JoAnn Fabrics store near North Star Mall won't be sitting empty much longer. Another fabric retailer is moving in, and for some San Antonio shoppers, it's a name they already know.
Parisina, a Mexican retailer specializing in fabrics, sewing supplies, crafts and home goods, plans to open its first San Antonio store at 25 NE Loop 410, Suite 114. The company has not announced an opening date, but it is already recruiting employees and promoting its arrival on social media.
The news comes more than a year after JoAnn closed its San Antonio stores as part of the company's nationwide shutdown in 2025. For customers who once shopped at the Loop 410 location for quilting fabric, sewing notions and craft supplies, Parisina's arrival means they'll soon have another place to find many of those items, right where they used to shop.
The planned opening, first reported locally by MySA on October 15, also marks another step in Parisina's expansion into Texas. The company already has stores in McAllen and Spring, north of Houston.
A Familiar Name in Mexico, a New Arrival in San Antonio
Although Parisina is new to San Antonio, the business has been around for more than 90 years.
Its history dates to 1933, when founder Juan José Sierra opened a fabric store in the historic center of Mexico City. The company grew gradually before beginning a larger expansion in the 1970s, opening additional stores in Mexico City and eventually moving into Guadalajara, Tampico, Puebla and other cities.
Today, Parisina is one of Mexico's established fabric and textile retailers. Its official corporate history lists 400 branches across all 32 Mexican states, serving customers looking for clothing fabrics, sewing supplies, home textiles and craft materials.
For generations of Mexican shoppers, Parisina has been a place to buy fabric for clothing, pick out materials for curtains, find decorative trim or stock up on supplies for a handmade project. The business has built its reputation around offering a large selection of merchandise at accessible prices.
That history gives the San Antonio opening an interesting connection to the city. With close family and cultural ties between San Antonio and Mexico, some residents may recognize Parisina from shopping trips across the border or visits with relatives.
For others, the Loop 410 store will be their first introduction to the brand.
What Will Parisina Sell at Its San Antonio Store?
Shoppers familiar with JoAnn will recognize many of the merchandise categories Parisina carries, although the two retailers are separate businesses.
Fabric is at the center of Parisina's offerings. The company sells materials for making clothing, quilts, curtains, furniture coverings and other sewing projects. Its selection also includes the smaller items needed to finish those projects, such as thread, buttons, zippers, ribbon, lace and other sewing accessories.
But fabric is only part of the inventory.
According to the company's U.S. website, Parisina also sells yarn, craft foam, glue, paints, artificial flowers and supplies for arts and crafts projects. Its home department includes decorative pillows, bedding, bath towels, kitchen linens, curtains, curtain rods, storage containers and other household items.
That makes the store relevant to more than experienced seamstresses and quilters. Parents shopping for school projects, teachers preparing classroom activities, people making Fiesta decorations and homeowners working on inexpensive decorating projects could all find reasons to visit.
Price is another part of Parisina's approach. The company's U.S. website advertises clearance fabrics starting at 99 cents per yard, upholstery and quilting fabrics starting at $1.99 per yard, and select household items starting at 99 cents.
Those are advertised prices from its existing U.S. operations. The company has not confirmed which products or promotions will be available at the San Antonio location.
Parisina Takes Over a Storefront Left Empty by JoAnn's Closure
The choice of location is particularly relevant for San Antonio residents who regularly shopped at JoAnn.
The national fabric and craft chain filed for bankruptcy protection in March 2024 and emerged from its initial restructuring later that year. Financial difficulties continued, however, and JoAnn filed for bankruptcy a second time in January 2025.
The company subsequently moved to close its remaining stores nationwide, ending a retail business that had served generations of American sewing and crafting customers.
In San Antonio, the shutdown affected three JoAnn locations, including stores on Loop 410, Bandera Road and Southeast Military Drive. The closures left customers looking for other places to purchase fabric and specialty sewing materials.
Parisina's decision to move into the former Loop 410 location is notable because it is not the first time the company has selected a vacant JoAnn storefront for its Texas expansion.
Its Spring store, which opened in May 2026, also occupies a former JoAnn location. In San Antonio, the new store will be located at Pavilions North Shopping Center, across from North Star Mall.
San Antonio Joins Parisina's Growing Texas Presence
Parisina's first two Texas stores provide an early look at how the Mexican retailer is introducing itself to American shoppers.
The company opened its McAllen location in December 2025 at 700 East Expressway 83, Suite 100, in a former Forever 21 space. It followed with the Spring store at 25415 Interstate 45 North in May 2026.
Both stores are listed on Parisina's official U.S. website, where customers can find their addresses and operating hours.
The decision to open in San Antonio gives Parisina a presence in three distinct Texas markets: the Rio Grande Valley, the Greater Houston area and San Antonio.
It also brings the company into a city with a substantial market for sewing, crafts and home decorating supplies, including residents who make their own clothing, operate alterations businesses, create handmade products or purchase materials for cultural celebrations.
Among the projects San Antonio shoppers may be particularly interested in are Fiesta wreaths, decorative accessories, costumes and traditional clothing. Parisina has not announced any San Antonio-specific merchandise, but its existing fabric and craft selection includes materials used for those kinds of projects.
The company has not disclosed whether additional San Antonio locations are being considered.
Parisina Is Already Hiring in San Antonio
While shoppers are still waiting for an opening date, Parisina has begun putting together its San Antonio team.
The company's official U.S. website lists employment opportunities for management team members, keyholders and sales floor associates ahead of the grand opening.
Applicants are instructed to submit a résumé and cover letter to the company's recruiting contacts listed online.
The hiring effort confirms that Parisina is preparing to staff the store, although the retailer has not disclosed the number of positions available, starting wages or expected hiring timeline.
Interested applicants can visit Parisina's official U.S. website for more information.
When Is Parisina Opening Near North Star Mall?
As of October 17, 2026, Parisina has not released an official opening date or store hours for its San Antonio location.
The company has announced the upcoming store on social media and is encouraging shoppers to follow along for updates. Its recruiting efforts are also underway, but no specific grand opening schedule has been confirmed.
The store will be located at 25 NE Loop 410, Suite 114, San Antonio, TX, in the former JoAnn Fabrics space near North Star Mall.
For customers who have missed browsing aisles of fabric, comparing materials in person or picking up last-minute sewing supplies without waiting for a delivery, the return of a fabric retailer to the Loop 410 storefront is something to look forward to.
And for San Antonio residents who already know Parisina from Mexico, a shopping trip that once required traveling outside the city will soon be possible much closer to home.
My Neighborhood News will continue following Parisina's plans and share updates when a grand opening date and additional store details are announced.
