Register Now for Cy-Fair’s Fall CERT Program: Free Disaster Training Begins August 20

August 08 2024

Registration is now open for the fall session of the Cy-Fair Community Emergency Response Training (CERT) program. The free CERT Disaster Training classes will run from August 20 to October 15, 2024, taking place each Tuesday evening from 6:30 to 9:30 PM at the Emergency Services Education Center, near the Lone Star College Cypress Entrance "E" and next to Fire Station 11.

Led by experienced and dedicated trainers from Cy-Fair CERT, Cy-Fair Fire Department, and Harris County Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HCOHSEM), the CERT program provides comprehensive training in disaster response, medical response, search and rescue, fire safety, and psychology. Adults ages 18 and up are welcomed and no pre-existing skills are required to complete the training. The program aims to prepare participants to react effectively and safely in emergency situations, promoting personal safety and that of their family and community.

The CERT program is a national initiative for personal safety, aiming to educate people on how not to become a victim during emergencies or disasters. The syllabus features diverse modules including disaster preparation, fire safety, medical operations and triage, search and rescue, disaster psychology, terrorism, and CERT, culminating in a final drill to demonstrate the skills learned during the class. To date, Cy-Fair CERT has trained over 600 citizens in the surrounding communities including Bear Creek, Bridgeland, Coles Crossing, Copperfield, Fairfield, Towne Lake and neighboring Cy-Fair communities.

The course is inclusive with no additional materials or items needed. A key benefit of this program is the provision of free safety equipment to all trainees. Furthermore, successful completion of the course results in a CERT ID card and a certificate of graduation, without any requirements to volunteer afterwards. Registered participants should e prepared to uphold a commitment to attend each class on time over the nine-week curriculum.

The trainers for this program are professionals in their respective fields, ensuring high-quality, practical, and hands-on training throughout the course. Interested persons are encouraged to register online here and get involved in this unique, empowering opportunity.
