Reach Unlimited Welcomes Community for Open Garden Day in March
Get ready to immerse yourself in a gardener's paradise as Reach Unlimited in Cypress hosts Open Garden Day this spring, including a unique community garden scavenger hunt. The community is invited to join the fun on March 9 from 10 am to 12 pm, beginning at Reach's very own teaching greenhouse, located at 11832 Mueller Cemetery Road in Cypress. Participants will have the opportunity to tour all the participating Community Gardens for a special treat: your very own tomato plant and everything you need to grow it! For Reach, the event marks an opportunity to share the joy of the gardens, as well as their heart-felt mission.
Reach Unlimited, a compassionate contributor to the Cypress gardening community, made its horticultural mark in 2021 with the revitalization of a state-of-the-art greenhouse. The organization soon started donating vegetable plants to community gardens in the area like Cy-Fair Helping Hands, ensuring fresh produce was available for local food pantries.
In partnership with the Cypress Community Garden Network, Reach further expanded its impact, benefitting more food pantries across the region. This outreach has proven to be phenomenally successful, with Reach having contributed over 1,700 plants in the past year alone, leading to an impressive 4,000 pounds of fresh produce for local food programs.
This organization isn't just about growing plants; it's also about growing people. Reach Unlimited hosts innovative programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities, teaching them a wide variety of skills like hands-on gardening. These skills equip members to become part-time employees tending to the gardens' needs, sowing seeds, transplanting seedlings and crafting decorative pots and centerpieces. Through this, members learn the intricacies of plant care, propagation, and its link to food production. The greenhouse at Reach, which acts as a real-life classroom, also offers a variety of herbs, vegetables, and ornamentals for sale to the public.
The upcoming Community Garden Scavenger Hunt encourages participants to explore the lush variety of gardens in the community including St. John Lutheran Church, Cy-Fair Helping Hands, Messiah Lutheran Church, and The Living Legacy Center. Participants will not only get a chance to connect with nature and engage in exciting activities but also collect "pieces of the puzzle” and have their 'passports' stamped at each location. Return to Reach with a completed passport and enter the draw for a special prize.
Join Reach Unlimited on March 9 to learn and explore. Visit the Reach Unlimited Facebook page for regular updates and drop by the greenhouse during the week, Monday through Friday from 10 AM to 12 PM, and Saturday from 10 AM to 2 PM. For more information, visit the Reach Unlimited website.
