Reach Unlimited Partners with Local Bakeries to Feature Edible Flowers in Baked Goods

December 09 2024

When you think of fresh, vibrant flowers, you might picture a garden or a bouquet, but for a growing number of local bakers, they’re a key ingredient in their pastries and cakes. Thanks to a unique collaboration between Reach Unlimited and local bakeries, the beauty of edible flowers is now gracing baked goods throughout the Cypress area. The flowers, grown with care by Reach’s members, not only add a burst of color to baked goods but also support the members of Reach as they develop new job skills and gain hands-on experience.

Founded in 1983 by a group of parents seeking better opportunities for their children with disabilities, Reach Unlimited has become a cornerstone of support for individuals with IDD, who are lovingly called "members". The nonprofit provides a range of services, including education, vocational training, and community involvement. The edible flower project is a natural extension of Reach’s mission, allowing members to gain hands-on work experience while contributing to local businesses and the community.

“This initiative is a perfect example of how we can blend meaningful work with community impact,” said Rossana Gonzalez, Gardening Instructor at Reach Unlimited. “We saw that local chefs were embracing edible flowers as a way to elevate their dishes, but they were having a hard time finding a reliable source for fresh, organic blooms year-round. That’s where we stepped in, and it’s been such a positive experience for both our members and the local bakeries.”

The response from local bakeries has been enthusiastic, with two bakeries already sourcing Reach’s edible flowers for their creations. P&P Desserts, a local coffee shop known for its delicious pastries, and Somos Semillas, a vegan bakery specializing in custom cakes, are among the first to partner with Reach. “Bakers and pastry chefs love the idea of using flowers in their designs, but finding high-quality, organic edible flowers has been a challenge for them,” Gonzalez explained. “We’re able to provide them with exactly what they need, and at a better price than traditional suppliers.”

For the members of Reach Unlimited, this collaboration offers more than just a chance to contribute to local businesses. It provides hands-on experience in gardening, plant care, and business operations. “Our members are directly involved in every step of the process,” Gonzalez said. “They plant the flowers, water them, and harvest them when they’re ready to sell. This gives them valuable skills and, most importantly, the opportunity to earn a paycheck for their work.”

The program is already making a difference. Through generous support from the Cy-Fair Women’s Club, Reach was able to launch the initiative with the materials needed to create a dedicated garden space for growing the flowers. The program has since expanded to include more raised garden beds, thanks to donations from local businesses like VEGO Garden Beds and Triple-S Compost.

As Reach Unlimited continues to grow its edible flower business, it’s also creating lasting connections with the Cypress community. “We’re not just growing flowers; we’re building relationships and raising awareness about the incredible abilities of people with disabilities,” Gonzalez said. “Our members are excited to be part of something that’s not only benefiting them but also enhancing the local businesses and the community as a whole.”

The public can support this new venture by purchasing a mix of fresh edible flower blooms directly from Reach Unlimited. A dozen blooms is available for just $4, with same-day harvesting to ensure the flowers are at their freshest. To place an order, customers can contact Reach at 832-458-6038

Through this initiative, Reach Unlimited is helping to create a more inclusive and sustainable community, one that recognizes the value and potential of people with disabilities. For Gonzalez and her team, it’s not just about the flowers — it’s about creating opportunities, fostering growth, and showing what’s possible when we all work together.
