Protect Your Heart: Harris County Public Health Offers Screenings and Programs for a Healthier Life
Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in both the United States and Harris County, claiming a life every 33 seconds. In 2023 alone, nearly one million people nationwide died due to heart-related conditions. In recognition of American Heart Month this February, Harris County Public Health (HCPH) is urging residents to prioritize their heart health by staying active, eating nutritious foods, and getting regular health screenings.
Understanding Heart Disease and Its Risks
Heart disease encompasses various conditions, with coronary artery disease (CAD) being the most common. CAD can restrict blood flow to the heart, increasing the risk of a heart attack. Often, symptoms go unnoticed until a major cardiac event occurs. Warning signs may include:
- Heart Attack: Chest pain, upper body discomfort, nausea, fatigue, and shortness of breath.
- Arrhythmia: Irregular heartbeats or palpitations.
- Heart Failure: Shortness of breath, swelling in the legs or abdomen, and extreme fatigue.
Several factors contribute to heart disease, including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, poor diet, lack of exercise, and excessive alcohol use. However, preventive measures can significantly reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular issues.
