Prepare for Extreme Cold and Potential Winter Weather Across Greater Houston Area

Prepare for Extreme Cold and Potential Winter Weather Across Greater Houston Area

January 16 2025

The National Weather Service has issued an update regarding the arrival of extreme cold conditions and the potential for winter precipitation in the coming days. Residents of Williamsburg Colony and the surrounding area should prepare for freezing temperatures and the possibility of snow, sleet, or freezing rain.

What to Expect

  • Timing: A cold front will move in on Saturday, with arctic air settling in on Sunday night. Low temperatures in the 20s to near 30 are expected to last through Tuesday night.
  • Hard Freeze: Areas north of I-10 will likely experience hard freeze conditions (24°F or below for two or more hours), with the possibility extending throughout the Houston area.
  • Winter Precipitation: There is a chance of snow, sleet, or freezing rain beginning Monday afternoon and continuing into Tuesday morning. The exact type and amount of precipitation will depend on small changes in temperature and the storm's path.

How to Prepare: The 4 P’s

Pipes
  • Insulate exposed pipes, outdoor faucets, and sprinkler systems.
  • Disconnect and drain garden hoses.
  • Open cabinets under sinks to allow warm air to circulate around indoor pipes.
People
  • Dress in layers and limit time outdoors.
  • Check on neighbors, especially the elderly or those with special needs.
  • Have extra blankets and a backup heat source ready.
Plants
  • Cover sensitive plants with frost cloths or blankets.
  • Bring potted plants indoors or into a garage.
Pets
  • Bring pets indoors or provide them with a warm, dry shelter.
  • Ensure they have access to non-frozen water.

Power Outage Safety Tips

If the power goes out during the freeze, follow these safety precautions:

  • Heating: Do not use grills, camp stoves, or ovens to heat your home. These can produce deadly carbon monoxide.
  • Generators: Keep portable generators outside and at least 20 feet away from your home, windows, and doors.
  • Lighting: Use flashlights instead of candles to reduce the risk of fire.
  • Food Safety: Keep refrigerator and freezer doors closed as much as possible to preserve food.

Stay Informed

As this weather system approaches, it’s important to stay updated on the latest forecasts. The situation remains uncertain, and changes in temperature or the storm’s track could significantly alter the impact on our area.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updates from the National Weather Service and local news outlets. By preparing now, we can stay safe and protect our homes, families, and pets during the extreme cold.

Stay warm and take care!
