Plaza Saltillo Station in East Austin Set for Major Upgrade as Rail and Trail Project Moves Forward
A significant transportation improvement project is on the horizon for East Austin as Capital Metropolitan Transportation Authority (CapMetro) moves forward with plans for the Plaza Saltillo Station Double Track and Trail Project, a $40.6 million investment designed to improve rail service, passenger amenities, and multimodal connectivity. The project received an $18 million federal RAISE/BUILD grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
According to project filings with the state, construction is currently scheduled to begin in June 2027 and continue through June 2028 at the Plaza Saltillo Station area near East 5th Street and Bolton Drive. As of Early 2026, CapMetro indicated that the project is currently advancing through the design phase, and a construction timeline for this project is still to be determined.
The project represents another step toward strengthening Austin's growing transit network while making it easier for residents, commuters, cyclists, and pedestrians to move through one of East Austin's key transit corridors.
What the Plaza Saltillo Double Track Project Includes
The planned improvements will transform an existing single-track section of rail into a double-track corridor, helping increase operational flexibility and reduce service constraints along CapMetro's MetroRail system.
Project plans include:
- Conversion of a single rail track to double track
- Construction of new passenger boarding platforms
- Installation of four covered passenger canopies totaling approximately 2,944 square feet
- Utility relocations
- Sidewalk and right-of-way improvements
- Trail-related infrastructure enhancements and connections
While the visible station improvements may seem modest compared to the project's overall budget, much of the investment supports rail infrastructure, utility work, safety improvements, and corridor enhancements necessary to support long-term transit growth.
Why Double Tracking Matters
For many transit riders, rail capacity is something they rarely think about—until delays occur.
Single-track rail systems require trains traveling in opposite directions to carefully coordinate movements, which can limit how frequently trains operate and create operational bottlenecks. By adding a second track, trains gain greater flexibility to pass one another and maintain schedules more efficiently.
The Plaza Saltillo corridor serves as a critical segment of Austin's MetroRail network, making this improvement particularly important as the region continues to experience rapid population growth and increasing transportation demands.
As Austin expands and more residents seek alternatives to driving, infrastructure projects like this one help prepare the transit system for future ridership while supporting broader mobility goals.
Benefits Beyond Rail Riders
The project isn't just about trains.
Plans also include improvements that benefit pedestrians and cyclists who use the area daily. Plaza Saltillo has evolved into one of East Austin's most active mixed-use districts, connecting residential neighborhoods, local businesses, entertainment destinations, and employment centers.
Enhanced trail connections, improved pedestrian areas, and upgraded station facilities can help create a safer and more accessible environment for everyone who travels through the corridor.
For nearby residents, the investment reflects ongoing efforts to create transportation options that support a more connected and walkable community.
Supporting Austin's Future Growth
East Austin has experienced significant redevelopment and population growth over the past decade, increasing demand for reliable transportation infrastructure.
Projects like the Plaza Saltillo Station Double Track and Trail Project are designed to address those needs while positioning the region for future transit expansion.
Although construction remains several years away, the planned improvements demonstrate the continued focus on building transportation systems capable of serving Austin's growing population while improving connections between neighborhoods, businesses, and destinations throughout the city.
With construction expected to begin in 2027, residents and commuters can expect additional project details and timelines to emerge as planning and design efforts continue.
