Playhouse 1960 Brings Productions of The Pirates of Penzance Jr., Bonnie & Clyde to the Stage

At Playhouse 1960 in Northwest Houston, two fantastic productions are soon to take center stage. From August 30th to September 8th, 2024, the youth actors of Playhouse 1960 will journey into the world of Gilbert and Sullivan's classic operetta, 'The Pirates of Penzance JR.' This beloved comedy, suffused with a modern sensibility, takes audiences on a swashbuckling adventure filled with wit, whimsy, and plenty of memorable musical numbers.

Set in the picturesque setting of Cornwall, England, the story unfolds as the pirates celebrate their fellow pirate, Frederic's 21st birthday, marking the end of his service with them. Having fulfilled his obligations, Frederic seeks to venture into a life of uprightness, potentially bringing his former comrades to justice. The plot twists and turns, promising a light-hearted, comedic experience for all.

Originally presented on Broadway by the New York Shakespeare Festival in 1981, this version of 'The Pirates of Penzance JR.' offers ample opportunities for ensemble and small group singing, perking up the audience's ears with unison or simple two-part harmonies. Directed by Amber Stepanik, this production is sure to be an engaging introduction to the world of Gilbert and Sullivan.

Playhouse 1960 is a proud volunteer-run community theater with a rich history spanning over half a century. Since its establishment in 1973, the theater has witnessed more than 500 productions involving 10,000 unique performers. Continuing the theatrical journey, from September 6th to 22nd, 2024, the adult mainstage performances will delve into the heat of the Great Depression with 'Bonnie & Clyde.' Known for their infamous criminal escapades, Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow ascend from being mere small-town nobodies to becoming the centerpiece of the nation's attention. As their bold, reckless actions and insatiable thirst for fame lead them down a perilous path, they and their loved ones are drawn into a web of crimes and pursual by law enforcement.

This electrifying story of love, adventure, and crime, with a non-traditional score blending blues, gospel, and rockabilly music, provides a thrilling and evocative journey for the audience. The Tony-nominated 'Bonnie & Clyde' is an exciting chance to showcase the theater's contemporary singers and actors with the book by Tan Munchell, lyrics by Don Black, and music by the legendary Frank Wildhorn.
