The lights were on, the stands were filled and a new chapter in Lamar CISD athletics was ready to begin.

Students, families, educators and community leaders gathered Aug. 27 for the official dedication of Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium, the district’s expanded athletic venue at 7920 FM 723 in Richmond. The ceremony celebrated more than a new place to play football—it connected Lamar CISD’s rapid growth with the legacy of a local leader who devoted more than two decades to its schools.

The dedication came during a milestone year for the district. Lamar CISD has surpassed 50,000 students for the first time, increasing the need for campuses and facilities where students can learn, compete, perform and build lasting connections.

“As our District grows, our responsibility is to make sure the opportunities we create grow right alongside it,” Lamar CISD Superintendent Dr. Roosevelt Nivens said. “When I look at this stadium, I don’t just see seats, lights, or a field. I see a student taking the field for the first time, a band performing in front of their community, a family cheering from the stands, and memories our kids will carry with them long after they leave Lamar CISD. That is what this is all about.”

A New Gathering Place for Lamar CISD Families

Located alongside Gene Tomas High School, which welcomed its first students in August 2025, Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium was developed in phases as the surrounding Richmond and Fulshear areas continued to grow.

The second phase began in September 2025 and was completed in August 2026. It expanded the venue from a smaller campus stadium to an approximately 4,500-seat facility capable of hosting varsity football games and other major district events.

The additional space is not only for student-athletes. Marching bands, cheerleaders, drill teams and other student organizations will also have opportunities to perform before larger crowds, while families gain another place to gather for the traditions that help shape a school community.

For residents in rapidly developing portions of Richmond and Fulshear, the stadium also brings more Lamar CISD athletic events closer to home.

Who Was Paul Scherer?

While the stadium represents Lamar CISD’s future, its name honors a leader whose service reaches deep into the district’s history.

Paul Scherer was a longtime Fort Bend County attorney and community leader who served 21 years on the Lamar CISD Board of Trustees, including multiple terms as Board president. Throughout those years, he worked to support public education and the students and families served by the district.

Scherer was widely remembered across Fort Bend County for his integrity, humility, thoughtful leadership and quiet generosity.

Reflecting on the motivation behind his public service, Scherer once said, “I felt that I’ve been so fortunate here and people have been so good to me, and it was such a nice, clean, wholesome town to live in that I should give something back to the community. I felt very strongly about that because of my feelings towards Richmond and Fort Bend County.”

Lamar CISD selected the stadium’s name through its formal facility-naming process. That process included community nominations, a public hearing, trustee review and final consideration by the Board of Trustees. Board members formally approved the name Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium in January 2026.

The name creates a meaningful connection between two people who shaped Lamar CISD in different ways. The neighboring high school honors Gene Tomas, a longtime district educator, while the stadium recognizes Scherer’s decades of service as a trustee and community leader.

Dedication Night Gives Way to Friday Night Traditions

Following the ceremony, the focus shifted from remembrance to competition as the Fulshear High School Chargers faced the Andy Dekaney High School Wildcats in the first football game played at the newly expanded and dedicated stadium.

For the players, the matchup opened a new season. For Lamar CISD, it marked the beginning of a much longer story.

Over the years ahead, thousands of students will run onto the field, perform at halftime, cheer from the sidelines and celebrate with classmates beneath the stadium lights. Parents and grandparents will fill the stands, new rivalries will emerge and school traditions will gradually become part of the venue’s identity.

Those moments will unfold in a stadium carrying the name of someone who believed deeply in giving back to the community that had given so much to him.

As Lamar CISD continues to grow, Paul Scherer Memorial Stadium now stands as both a practical response to that growth and a lasting reminder of the service that helped shape the district.
