Mother-Son Duos Bond Through Volunteerism in Cy-Fair

January 11 2024

In the Cy-Fair area, a nonprofit organization is on mission to strengthen relationships between mothers and their sons through service to the community.

Partnering with organizations like Cypress Assistance Ministries, Boys and Girls Country, Cy-Fair Helping Hands, Cy-Hope and many others, the Young Men's Service League Cy-Fair Chapter is a beacon of community service and character building in the local area. As part of the national non-profit YMSL organization, this chapter is comprised of 192 dedicated members, including 90 moms and their 102 sons, who attend Cy Woods High School, Bridgeland High School, Cy Fair High School, Cy Ranch High School, Cy Springs High School, Cy Falls High School, Cy Lakes High School, and private schools.

The mission of the chapter is two-fold: providing service opportunities for moms and their teenage sons to collaborate and give back to their community, and fostering leadership and life skills in these young men through a comprehensive four-year program.

Nathan, a young member of the league, attests to the significance of community involvement. He shares that through YMSL, he has gained a novel perspective, and his eyes have been opened to the dependency of various philanthropies on the efforts of volunteers - a realization that has solidified his commitment to community service.

For the members, the experiences afforded by participation in the YMSL Cy-Fair Chapter have made a profound imprint on their lives. Heather, one of the moms, has found the organization to be transformative for her son. "His volunteer work has been meaningful," she shares, noting that her son has cultivated a heart for service. The opportunity to volunteer together, she points out, has made them a stronger team.

Membership in the YMSL Cy-Fair Chapter, while open to all interested parties, requires a sponsor who is a current member of the chapter. Prospective member meetings are held periodically, the next one being scheduled for February 12 at the Cole's Crossing Community Center, located at 13050 Barker Cypress Road from 6:30 PM to 7:00 PM. Note that this informative session is a moms-only event, and interested individuals will need to attend with a sponsor. For assistance in getting a sponsor, email Ashley Buchanan, the VP of Membership for the YMSL Cy-Fair Chapter, at ymslcyfairmembership@gmail.com.

Buchanan speaks exuberantly about the formation of the chapter, having found the organization through a Facebook post.

"Having been a member of the National Charity League with my daughter, I was excited that there would now be a similar organization available for my son and I to serve together," said Buchanan.

The YMSL Cy-Fair Chapter is part of an expansive network that stretches across 20 states, representing over 27,000 members. The organization’s goal is to instill a heart of service in young men, developing them into the compassionate and capable leaders of tomorrow.

For those interested in becoming a part of this transformative organization, further information about the YMSL Cy-Fair Chapter is available on their website at chapters.ymsl.org/chapter/CyFair.
