A smoke alarm is one of those household safety devices people may not think much about until the moment it matters most. For families in Granger Pines served by Montgomery County Emergency Services District No. 9, local firefighters are offering a practical way to make sure those alarms are actually ready to do their job.

Montgomery County ESD 9 allows residents in its service area to request a home visit to have existing smoke alarms checked, determine whether a home has adequate smoke detectors, receive smoke detectors or have detectors installed. Residents can request an appointment online or call the department at 936-231-3527. 

The service puts a familiar local face behind an important piece of home fire safety: firefighters who already respond when emergencies happen can also help residents prepare before one occurs.

What Montgomery County ESD 9 Can Check at Your Home

Residents who are uncertain whether their smoke alarms are working properly do not have to figure it out alone.

According to Montgomery County ESD 9, residents within the district can request assistance if they want firefighters to check their current smoke alarms, are unsure whether smoke alarms are present in the home, need smoke detectors provided or would like help installing them.

That can be particularly useful for homeowners who have recently moved, families living in an older home, residents who are unsure when their alarms were last checked, or anyone who simply wants another set of eyes on an important home-safety measure.

For Granger Pines households within ESD 9's boundaries, the program also removes some of the uncertainty that can come with deciding where to begin. Rather than waiting until an alarm chirps, fails or a fire exposes a problem, residents can proactively ask the department for assistance.

Appointments Available Seven Days a Week

Montgomery County ESD 9 schedules smoke alarm checkups between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., seven days a week, except holidays. Residents can request a specific time or indicate a preference for morning or afternoon.

The department asks residents, when possible, to submit requests at least two days before their preferred appointment date. After a request is submitted, ESD 9 will contact the resident to confirm the appointment. If the requested date or time cannot be accommodated, another option may be arranged.

There is one understandable caveat when scheduling firefighters for a home visit: emergencies come first. Montgomery County ESD 9 notes that crews could be called to an emergency and may occasionally be unable to provide advance notice that an appointment must be missed. When that happens, the department says it will contact the resident as soon as possible to reschedule.

A Local Fire Department Serving a Growing Part of Montgomery County

The smoke detector program is one part of Montgomery County ESD 9's broader role in Central Montgomery County.

The career fire department provides fire suppression and emergency medical services across approximately 70 square miles. According to the department, its full- and part-time firefighters respond to an average of about 2,400 calls annually from seven fire stations, four of which are staffed.

The district has also been adapting as new subdivisions and businesses continue to develop within its territory. Fire Chief Raymond Flannelly has said the department has worked to increase staffing and prepare for rising call volumes associated with that growth.

That growth makes prevention and household preparedness increasingly important alongside emergency response. A working smoke alarm may seem like a small piece of equipment, but early warning can give sleeping families critical notice when smoke or fire develops.

How Granger Pines Residents Can Request a Smoke Alarm Visit

Residents served by Montgomery County ESD 9 can complete the department's Smoke Detector Request form online through the ESD 9 website. The form asks for basic contact and property information, including the resident's address, subdivision, number of bedrooms and preferred appointment date and time. Residents may also call 936-231-3527 to coordinate a visit.

The department's administrative office is located at 16723 FM 2090 in Conroe.
