The Woodlands to Unveil Six New Town Center Trolleys November 7, Complete With Community-Chosen Names
For nearly two decades, the Town Center Trolleys have been a familiar sight along The Woodlands Waterway, carrying residents and visitors between some of the community's most popular shopping, dining and entertainment destinations. Now, the free transportation service is preparing to introduce six new trolleys, and The Woodlands Township is inviting the community to help celebrate their arrival.
The Grand Trolley Reveal will take place Saturday, November 7, 2026, from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Southside Trolley Stop near The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion. Families will have an opportunity to see the new fleet up close, learn the names selected through a community naming contest and climb aboard the new vehicles.
The celebration also recognizes local children who helped welcome the new fleet through a trolley coloring contest, bringing a personal touch to a transportation service that has become part of everyday life in The Woodlands.

The Woodlands Trolley Naming and Coloring Contests Give Residents a Role in the Celebration
The arrival of the new trolleys has been a community project in more ways than one.
Earlier this year, The Woodlands Township invited residents to participate in a Trolley Naming Contest, giving the public an opportunity to suggest names for the incoming vehicles. The contest resulted in 20 winning submissions, with the new trolley names scheduled to be revealed during the November 7 celebration.
Younger residents also had an opportunity to participate through the Trolley Coloring Contest, which recognized 12 winners across four age divisions: ages 0 to 3, 4 to 7, 8 to 11 and 12 to 15.
The four first-place coloring contest winners will be announced ahead of the Grand Trolley Reveal, while participating young artists will receive recognition as part of the celebration.
For children who submitted artwork or families who helped brainstorm trolley names, the event provides an opportunity to see how their contributions became part of a communitywide celebration.
Nearly 20 Years of Free Trolley Service in The Woodlands
Long before the arrival of the new fleet, the Town Center Trolley had established itself as a convenient way to get around The Woodlands without having to move a vehicle between destinations.
The service has operated for almost 20 years, providing free transportation through The Woodlands Town Center and connecting residents, employees and visitors to shopping centers, restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues and recreational areas.
The trolley system is part of The Woodlands Township's broader transportation services, which include public transit options designed to help people travel within the community and connect to surrounding employment centers.
Unlike traditional bus transportation, the Town Center Trolleys have a distinctive appearance that has made them recognizable throughout The Woodlands. Their classic trolley-inspired design also complements the pedestrian-friendly character of the Waterway and surrounding Town Center destinations.
Over the years, the service has offered a practical alternative for residents attending concerts, meeting friends for dinner, visiting local attractions or spending an afternoon shopping.
Because rides are free, the trolleys also provide an accessible transportation option for families and visitors looking to explore several destinations in a single outing.
Where Do the Free Town Center Trolleys Go?
Today, the Town Center Trolley system connects several of The Woodlands' best-known destinations, including Hughes Landing, Market Street, The Woodlands Mall and The Woodlands Waterway.
The service makes it possible to visit multiple shopping, dining and entertainment areas without driving and parking at each location.
For example, someone spending the afternoon at Market Street can use the trolley system to explore other stops along the route, while visitors staying near the Waterway can use the service to reach additional Town Center attractions.
The free trolleys normally operate seven days a week, although riders should check current schedules and route information before traveling.
The Woodlands Township also offers a real-time trolley tracking system through Passio GO, allowing passengers to see where vehicles are along the route.
Residents and visitors can access current trolley routes, operating hours, stop locations and live vehicle tracking at woodlandstransit.com/Trolleys.
The real-time trolley tracking map is particularly helpful for families attending events or visitors coordinating stops throughout Town Center.
How the Town Center Trolleys Have Changed Since 2007
The Town Center Trolley service officially began in July 2007 with vintage-style, rubber-tired vehicles designed to provide a convenient way to travel through the growing Town Center district.
According to The Woodlands Township's transportation history, the original program received funding through the Houston-Galveston Area Council's Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Pilot Program. The goal was to reduce short vehicle trips, ease traffic congestion and support transportation around the developing Town Center area.
The system has undergone several changes since its early years.
In 2017, the Township approved improvements to the trolley route and operating schedule, including additional service during busy periods. The following year, on April 16, 2018, the route expanded to Hughes Landing, connecting another major dining, residential and business destination to the existing network. That expansion also introduced smartphone-based vehicle tracking.
More recently, in March 2025, the Township expanded the route again with two additional stops serving public parking areas near The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion, including access to the Green Lot, Riva Row Boat House and nearby special-event parking.
The changes have helped the trolley service adapt as The Woodlands has grown, particularly in areas where restaurants, entertainment venues, offices and residential developments bring more people into Town Center.
The six new vehicles represent the next stage of that history. According to the Township's 2026 adopted budget, the replacement trolleys were purchased with 100% federal funding, and the Township contracted with Model 1/Creative Bus Sales for their manufacture.
A New Look That Reflects The Woodlands' Character
The community naming contest was designed around a theme closely associated with The Woodlands: nature.
When the contest opened in January 2026, residents were encouraged to submit nature-inspired names reflecting the community's identity and the vision of its founder, George P. Mitchell.
The contest allowed residents to submit up to three suggestions, followed by a finalist selection process and public voting in February.
The new names and graphics will give each vehicle its own identity while maintaining the recognizable trolley service residents have known for years.
The Grand Trolley Reveal is free to attend and will take place at 2005 Lake Robbins Drive in The Woodlands.
For residents planning to use the trolley system beyond the celebration, regular operating hours are Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 7 p.m. Service is not available on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day or New Year's Day.
Additional event information is available through The Woodlands Township's Grand Trolley Reveal announcement.
As the Town Center Trolley approaches its 20th anniversary in 2027, the arrival of the new fleet marks another chapter for a service that has grown alongside The Woodlands itself. And this time, residents will have the added distinction of seeing names inspired by their neighbors traveling along the Waterway.
