Mobility Enhancements Along Westpark Corridor Planned Under Regional Partnership

More than 16 miles of multi-modal mobility enhancements are planned for the Westpark Tollway Corridor under a new partnership between the City of Houston, Harris County, Fort Bend County, and the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO), officials announced Thursday afternoon.

The partnership was formalized during a Memorandum of Understanding signing ceremony in downtown Houston. Precinct 4 Commissioner Lesley Briones, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner, Fort Bend County Judge K.P. George, and Metro Board Chair Sanjay Ramabhadran are all signatories on the agreement.

“The study to re-envision Westpark Tollway is a once-in-a-generation infrastructure project. With a focus on deep community engagement, we will deliver multimodal transportation options that expand our mobility capacity and reconnect vulnerable communities that have been impacted by legacy infrastructure decisions. I’m proud to double-down on this commitment with our incredible partners at HCTRA, METRO, Fort Bend County, and the City of Houston,” said Commissioner Lesley Briones.

Under the partnership, all four entities will work together on multi-modal mobility enhancements extending west of METRO’s Westchase Park and Ride, the planned terminus of the 25-mile METRORapid University Corridor Project, which is scheduled to begin construction in 2026. The planned enhancements will offer residents of western Harris County and eastern Fort Bend County expanded mobility options that compliment existing infrastructure managed by multiple entities.

“The collaborative partnership between the City of Houston, Harris County, Fort Bend County, and the Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (Metro) to explore the Westpark Corridor represents a pivotal step towards creating a seamlessly integrated mobility system,” stated Judge KP George. “By incorporating all modes of transportation, including auto, bus, bicycle, and pedestrian activities, this initiative aims to enhance connectivity, accessibility, and sustainability within the region. As Fort Bend County experiences rapid growth, this forward-thinking collaboration is poised to not only accommodate the increasing demands of the community but also to foster economic development and improve the overall quality of life for our residents.”

METRO Board Chair Sanjay Ramabhadran noted that “This is a classic example of ‘Together, we can do more’ - leveraging a potential federal investment on the 25-mile University MetroRapid Corridor to deliver 16 additional miles of mobility enhancements to the residents of Houston, Harris County and Fort Bend County.”
