Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital North Tower Tops Out as $277.5 Million Expansion Takes Shape
For a community that has spent years watching homes, schools, roads and businesses spread across northwest Harris County, the growth of Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital has followed a similar trajectory.
Now, one of the hospital’s largest projects to date is beginning to look less like a set of plans and more like the next chapter of health care in Cypress.
Memorial Hermann Health System recently celebrated the topping out of its new North Tower at Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital, marking the point when construction reached the highest structural level of the building. More than 300 people involved in the project joined the milestone celebration, according to Jerry A. Ashworth, FACHE, senior vice president and CEO of Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital and Memorial Hermann Katy Hospital.
“We recently celebrated the topping out of our 346,000-square-foot expansion at Memorial Hermann Health System Cypress Hospital for our new North Tower alongside more than 300 members of the project team, including our partners at Strategic Partners, Inc., HKS, Inc., THR3E Design, Vaughn Construction, IMEG, Smith Seckman Reid, Inc., Walter P Moore and the many trade partners who have helped bring this vision to life,” Ashworth shared.
The milestone comes less than a year after Memorial Hermann officially broke ground on the $277.5 million Cypress Hospital expansion on Sept. 30, 2025. The project was first announced in July 2024 and is scheduled for completion in 2027.
For residents of Cypress, Waller and surrounding northwest Houston communities, the significance goes well beyond the height of the new building. The project is designed to increase the amount of emergency, inpatient, surgical, rehabilitation, cardiovascular, neurological and women’s health care available closer to home as the surrounding population continues to grow.
New North Tower Will Add Beds, Rehabilitation Services and Room to Grow
At the center of the Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital expansion is the new six-story North Tower, with structural capacity for two additional floors in the future.
The broader project is expected to increase the hospital’s licensed bed capacity from 149 to 201, with the ability to eventually accommodate as many as 345 beds at full build-out.
Among the additions will be 12 inpatient rehabilitation beds operated by TIRR Memorial Hermann, bringing inpatient TIRR rehabilitation services to the Cypress campus for the first time. The North Tower will also include additional patient beds, specialty services, a dialysis suite and hospital dining and kitchen functions.
Ashworth said the topping-out milestone reflects the work happening behind the scenes while the hospital remains fully operational.
“Topping out represents much more than reaching the highest point of construction. It is a reflection of collaboration, planning and an incredible amount of expertise coming together to expand healthcare access while our hospital continues serving patients every day.”
That distinction matters for a project of this size. Construction is moving forward on an active hospital campus where physicians, nurses and other caregivers continue treating patients around the clock.
Emergency Center, Operating Rooms and Women’s Services Are Expanding
Some of the expansion’s most noticeable changes for local families will be inside the hospital’s Emergency Center.
Plans call for the Emergency Center to grow from 27 beds to 40, including eight dedicated pediatric emergency rooms and four trauma rooms. The hospital will also add four operating rooms, increasing its total from six to 10.
Women’s and newborn services are slated for significant growth as well. The project includes a dedicated obstetric emergency department, a new C-section operating room and six additional neonatal intensive care unit beds.
Cardiovascular and neurological services will expand through the addition of another catheterization lab and neuro endovascular suite.
The project also includes upgrades and renovations affecting the pharmacy, laboratory, sterile processing departments, existing patient towers, café and dining areas.
Outside the hospital, plans call for campus improvements, an expanded parking garage, central utility plant upgrades and relocation of the Memorial Hermann Life Flight helipad to the rooftop of the hospital’s Main Tower.
Ashworth described the project as an investment tied directly to the future needs of the surrounding community.
“Most importantly, this expansion is an investment in the future of Cypress and the communities we are privileged to serve. It will allow us to grow alongside our community and provide more patients and families with access to the high-quality, compassionate care they deserve — closer to home.”
Memorial Hermann Cypress Has Been Expanding Almost Since It Opened
The size of the current project is notable, but growth itself is nothing new for Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital.
This is the hospital’s third major expansion since opening in 2017.
Previous investments have added 62 inpatient beds, a second professional office building, additional parking and Memorial Hermann Sports Park – Cypress, developed in partnership with Athlete Training and Health and affiliated orthopedic specialists.
The health system has also been extending its footprint beyond the main Cypress hospital campus.
In Bridgeland, Memorial Hermann broke ground on a $12.4 million, 51,000-square-foot medical office building near Tuckerton and Fry roads that is expected to open in 2026. Plans include primary care, pediatrics, sports medicine and emergency services serving Bridgeland and the surrounding Cypress area.
Memorial Hermann GoHealth Urgent Care has also opened at Village Green at Bridgeland Central, giving residents another option for walk-in care without traveling to a hospital emergency department for less serious medical needs.
Taken together, the projects reflect how health care infrastructure is responding to the same growth that has reshaped Cypress over the past decade.
What the Memorial Hermann Cypress Expansion Means for Local Families
For longtime residents, the changes around Cypress can sometimes be measured by what families no longer have to leave the area to find.
Shopping, dining, schools, recreation and professional services have all expanded alongside the region’s residential growth. Health care is increasingly part of that same shift.
More hospital beds and operating rooms can help accommodate a larger population. Dedicated pediatric emergency rooms provide families with children a more specialized option close to home. Expanded trauma, cardiovascular, neurological and women’s health services can reduce the need for some patients to travel deeper into Houston for care.
And the arrival of inpatient TIRR Memorial Hermann rehabilitation services could be particularly meaningful for patients recovering from serious injuries, surgeries, strokes or other conditions who previously may have needed to travel farther for inpatient rehabilitation.
Construction will continue across the Memorial Hermann Cypress Hospital campus as crews work toward the project’s anticipated 2027 completion. The topping out of the North Tower does not mark the end of that work, but it does offer Cypress residents their clearest look yet at how significantly the hospital is changing to meet the needs of the community around it.
