Reach Unlimited Announces First-Ever Charity Mah Jongg Tournament in Cypress as Popular Tile Game Brings Community Together for a Cause
Mah Jongg has become a favorite way for friends to gather, meet new people and enjoy a little friendly competition across Cypress and Northwest Houston. Now, a local nonprofit is putting that enthusiasm to work for a cause close to home.
Reach Unlimited, a longtime Cypress nonprofit serving adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, has announced its inaugural Reach Beyond the Rack Charity Mah Jongg Tournament, scheduled for Saturday, February 27, 2027, at The Lakehouse at Towne Lake in Cypress.
Presented by RNWBL, the Texas-themed tournament will bring together experienced Mah Jongg players, newcomers and community supporters for a day of competition, socializing and fundraising. Registration opens Monday, November 2, 2026, at 9 a.m., with limited space available.
For Reach Unlimited, the tournament offers another way to introduce neighbors to the organization's work while raising funds for programs that help adults with disabilities build independence, develop practical skills and participate more fully in their community.
“Reach Beyond the Rack is about much more than the tiles on the table,” said Lauren Black, Executive Director of Reach Unlimited. “It is an opportunity for our community to come together, have fun and help create meaningful opportunities for the remarkable individuals we serve.”
Why Mah Jongg Is Becoming a Popular Social Activity in Cypress and Beyond
For those who have noticed Mah Jongg gatherings popping up at neighborhood clubhouses, community centers and private homes, the growing interest is part of a broader resurgence in the centuries-old game.
Originating in China during the 19th century, Mah Jongg eventually spread around the world, developing different regional styles and traditions. American Mah Jongg, which became established in the United States during the 1920s, remains especially popular among organized social groups and tournament players.
The game is typically played by four people using sets of decorated tiles featuring suits, winds, dragons and other symbols. Players take turns drawing and discarding tiles as they work toward completing specific combinations, somewhat like the card game rummy.
In American Mah Jongg, players generally follow a standardized card of winning hands published annually by the National Mah Jongg League. The changing combinations give returning players new patterns to learn and strategies to consider each year.
Although the rules can seem intimidating at first, much of the game's appeal comes from what happens around the table. Players have time to talk, laugh, catch up with friends and enjoy the challenge of recognizing patterns and deciding which tiles to keep or discard.
The game's renewed popularity has been fueled by social media, organized lessons, attractive modern tile sets and an expanding interest in activities that bring people together in person. Younger adults are discovering a pastime that earlier generations have enjoyed for decades, while longtime players are finding new groups and opportunities to compete.
In communities such as Cypress, Towne Lake, Bridgeland, Fairfield and Copperfield, where neighborhood gatherings are an important part of social life, Mah Jongg fits naturally into everything from casual afternoon games to organized charity events.
The Reach Beyond the Rack tournament builds on that social appeal, giving participants an opportunity to enjoy a game they love while supporting a nonprofit that has served the Cypress community for more than four decades.
More Than 40 Years of Supporting Adults With Disabilities in Cypress
For families who have a loved one with an intellectual or developmental disability, finding meaningful opportunities for adulthood can be a lifelong concern. Employment, housing, friendships, transportation and daily living skills can all present challenges, particularly when someone needs ongoing support.
That is where Reach Unlimited has focused its work for more than 40 years.
The Cypress-based nonprofit provides services designed to help adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities develop their abilities, gain confidence and participate in everyday community life.
Its programs include residential services, vocational training, day programs, life-skills development and community experiences that encourage greater independence and personal growth.
Rather than approaching every participant's needs in the same way, Reach Unlimited focuses on helping individuals develop their own skills and pursue meaningful activities with the support they need.
Residential services help provide structured living environments, while vocational opportunities give participants experience developing workplace skills and engaging in productive activities. Day programs and community engagement opportunities offer additional ways to build friendships, maintain routines and participate in activities beyond the home.
For families and caregivers, these services can also provide reassurance that their loved ones have opportunities to continue learning, connecting with others and enjoying fulfilling lives as adults.
The organization refers to the individuals it serves as members, reflecting its emphasis on belonging and participation.
Funds raised through the Reach Beyond the Rack Charity Mah Jongg Tournament will support these ongoing programs and services, helping Reach Unlimited continue its work with adults and families throughout the Cypress area.

Reach Unlimited's work extends well beyond its Cypress campus. According to the organization's website, it operates 23 group homes across Northwest Harris County, from Tomball to Spring Branch, and its Learning Activity Center serves approximately 300 members annually.
The nonprofit's beginnings are particularly meaningful. Reach Unlimited was founded in 1983 by parents concerned about what would happen when their children with disabilities graduated from high school and no longer had access to the same educational programs and support.
Those parents helped create the opportunities they wanted their children to have, beginning with residential services and eventually expanding into employment training, social programs and the Blair Inez Scianna Learning Activity Center, which opened in 2005.
Today, Reach Unlimited's vocational programs include a glass studio, teaching greenhouse and microgreens operation, where members can develop job skills and, in certain programs, earn wages for their work. Its supported employment services also help members prepare for jobs with local businesses.
What to Expect at the Reach Beyond the Rack Mah Jongg Tournament
The February tournament is being organized by event co-chairs Colleen Wells and Sheri Keen, with RNWBL serving as presenting sponsor.
Inspired by the beauty and spirit of Texas, the event will feature a Texas theme, bringing a local touch to a game with international roots.
Participants can expect four rounds of tournament and social play, providing opportunities for friendly competition and time with fellow Mah Jongg enthusiasts.
Players of all experience levels are invited to participate, although those unfamiliar with the game may want to learn the basics before tournament day.
The event will take place at The Lakehouse at Towne Lake, 10000 Towne Lake Parkway, Cypress, TX 77433, a gathering place within the Towne Lake community.
Registration opens at 9 a.m. on November 2, 2026. Those interested in participating can complete the Reach Beyond the Rack tournament interest form to receive registration information.
Because space is limited, organizers encourage interested players to register early.
How Cypress Residents and Local Businesses Can Support Reach Unlimited
Residents do not have to be Mah Jongg players to help make the tournament successful.
Reach Unlimited is also welcoming sponsorships, donations and in-kind contributions from businesses and community members who want to support its mission.
Local businesses interested in participating can explore Reach Beyond the Rack sponsorship opportunities.
For those unable to attend, Reach Unlimited offers other opportunities to get involved throughout the year, including donations, volunteering, community events and tours of its facilities.
The nonprofit offers family and community tours at its Learning Activity Center, located at 11832 Mueller Cemetery Road in Cypress. These visits allow prospective families, volunteers and supporters to see its programs firsthand and better understand how members spend their days. Information about scheduling a visit is available on the organization's tour page.
Residents can also support the organization through its gift shop and member-supported enterprises, including its greenhouse and glass studio. Purchases help sustain programs that provide hands-on learning and vocational opportunities.

For a nonprofit that began with a handful of parents looking for a better future for their children, the Reach Beyond the Rack tournament represents another opportunity for the surrounding community to be part of that effort.
Whether participants come for the competition, the friendships or the opportunity to support Reach Unlimited, the event brings together two things that have long mattered in Cypress: neighbors spending time together and neighbors helping one another.
