For families looking for Christmas events in Cypress and Northwest Houston, one of the area's longstanding holiday traditions is officially on the calendar. Tickets are now on sale for Houston Repertoire Ballet's 2026 production of The Nutcracker, with five performances scheduled for December 4-6 at the CFISD Visual and Performing Arts Center in Cypress.

The annual production brings together talented young dancers from the Houston area, professional ballet artists and a live orchestra for a holiday performance that has become a family tradition for generations of local audiences. With tickets starting at $30, the production offers families an opportunity to experience a full-length classical ballet close to home while supporting a local performing arts organization.

This year's performances mark 31 years of Houston Repertoire Ballet bringing The Nutcracker to area audiences, continuing a tradition that introduces children to ballet while giving aspiring young dancers the opportunity to perform alongside established professionals.

A Christmas Classic Brought to Life by Local Dancers and Professional Artists

For anyone who has never attended The Nutcracker, the story follows Clara, a young girl whose Christmas Eve takes an extraordinary turn when her Nutcracker toy comes to life.

After a battle with the Mouse King, Clara and her Nutcracker Prince travel through the Land of Snow before arriving in the Land of Sweets, where they encounter a colorful celebration of dance.

Set to Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's celebrated score, the ballet has become a holiday favorite around the world, recognized for its memorable music, elaborate costumes and dances such as the Waltz of the Flowers and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy.

Houston Repertoire Ballet's production features the Houston Repertoire Ballet Orchestra, conducted by Tarana Taylor, providing live musical accompaniment throughout the performance.

Joining the local cast this year are two guest artists from Ballet West: Maren Florence, a demi-soloist who will dance the role of the Sugar Plum Fairy, and Hadriel Diniz, a principal artist performing as her Cavalier.

The production also features theatrical sets designed by professional set designer Ian Loveall and constructed by Dallas Stage Scenery Co. The sets were introduced in 2024, when Houston Repertoire Ballet moved its annual production to the CFISD Visual and Performing Arts Center.

More Than 30 Years of Bringing Ballet to Northwest Houston

Houston Repertoire Ballet has deep roots in the Northwest Houston arts community. Founded by Gilbert Rome and Victoria Vittum, the nonprofit pre-professional ballet company was established in 1994 and received its nonprofit designation in 1995.

The organization was created to give talented young dancers in Northwest Harris County access to advanced classical ballet training and meaningful performance opportunities without having to leave their community.

Today, Houston Repertoire Ballet continues that mission through its relationship with the Ballet Center of Houston, where its company dancers train. The organization presents multiple productions throughout the year, including its annual Nutcracker, spring Celebration of Dance and student choreography performances.

Over the years, former dancers have gone on to professional careers with companies including American Ballet Theatre, Houston Ballet, Colorado Ballet and Miami City Ballet.

For families watching this year's production, some of the young performers onstage may be taking the same early steps toward professional dance careers.

Giving CFISD Students a Chance to Experience The Nutcracker

Houston Repertoire Ballet's connection to local schools extends beyond its public performances.

Through its Nutcracker Experience outreach program, the organization provides selected third-grade students from Title I schools in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD with the opportunity to participate in the production at no cost to their families.

Students do not need previous dance experience. Costumes, supplies and rehearsals are provided free of charge, and participants have the opportunity to perform for fellow CFISD students during special school-day performances.

The 2026 program's audition registration has already closed, but the initiative remains an important part of the organization's work to make performing arts experiences accessible to more local children.

The school performances are scheduled for December 3 and 4, ahead of the five public performances that weekend.

Planning a Family Holiday Outing in Cypress

With afternoon and evening performances available, families have several options for fitting The Nutcracker into their December holiday plans.

The production also offers an opportunity to support local arts education. Behind the costumes and stage scenery are young dancers who spend months training and rehearsing for the chance to perform before their community.

For some children in the audience, it may be their first introduction to classical ballet. For others, attending The Nutcracker is already a holiday tradition they look forward to sharing with parents, grandparents and friends.

Tickets for Houston Repertoire Ballet's December 4-6, 2026 performances are available now at hrbdance.org/nutcracker. Families interested in attending are encouraged to review the available performance times and seating options when purchasing tickets.
