Major Road Expansion Coming to Cypress North Houston Road from Jones Road to Perry Road
A major infrastructure project is scheduled to break ground in 2026 along Cypress North Houston Road between Jones Road and Perry Road, bringing expanded lanes, safer intersections, and upgraded drainage to one of Cypress’s key east-west corridors.
Harris County Commissioners Court has approved the project as a “public necessity and convenience” following legislative actions on October 29, 2024 and December 10, 2024, allowing the county to move forward with land acquisitions, design, and eventual construction.
Project Overview
The $17.6 million project will transform the existing two-lane asphalt road with open ditches into a four-lane concrete boulevard with a raised median, sidewalks, and subsurface drainage systems. The segment covers Cypress North Houston Road from Jones Road to Perry Road.
Recently filed permits with the state indicate that the construction phase is scheduled to begin on May 1, 2026, with completion targeted for August 31, 2027. The project will span approximately 1,009,000 square feet of roadway surface.

What’s Changing
According to the Harris County Engineering Department and Real Property Division, key components of the upgrade include:
- Widening the road from 2 lanes to 4 lanes with a raised median
- Installation of an underground storm sewer system to replace roadside ditches
- Construction of two detention ponds for flood mitigation
New or upgraded traffic signals at:
- Autumn Mill Drive
- Misty Moss Lane
- Perry Road
- Pedestrian sidewalks to increase walkability and safety
Why It Matters
The road improvement is intended to address growing traffic volumes and mobility needs in northwest Harris County, particularly in the Cypress area, where residential and commercial development continues to expand.
The project is expected to:
- Reduce traffic delays and congestion
- Improve safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians
- Provide better stormwater management and drainage, helping to mitigate flooding risks in surrounding neighborhoods
- Enhance connectivity between Jones Road, Perry Road, and other key thoroughfares
In legislative findings, the Commissioners Court emphasized that the improvements will “provide safe mobility for residents, pedestrians, and drivers,” and that delays in moving forward would negatively impact mobility in the area.

Land Acquisition and Legal Actions
To accommodate the expanded roadway and drainage improvements, the county has authorized the acquisition of multiple land parcels through both fee simple purchases and easements:
- October 29, 2024: Approval for acquiring 7 road easements, 1 fee simple tract, and 1 temporary construction easement
- December 10, 2024: Approval for acquiring an additional 3 fee simple tracts to complete the right-of-way needs
All land purchases are being handled by the Harris County Real Property Division, directed by Michael Ware.
Project Funding and Oversight
The project is publicly funded and being managed by Harris County Precinct 3, under the direction of County Engineer Dr. Milton Rahman, PhD, P.E. According to official documents, the project aligns with the county’s strategic goal of improving transportation and flood mitigation in high-growth areas.
While the project involves public land and funding, it is also listed as involving federal roadway funding, which helps support its extensive scope and long-term mobility impact.
What’s Next for Residents?
