LSC-CyFair Invites the Community to Discover Global Music and Culture Through Spring Discovery Recital Series
This spring, the Lone Star College–CyFair Music Department is opening its doors to the wider community with a Discovery Recital Series designed to bring people together through live music, culture, and shared experience. The series offers three unique performances that blend classical traditions, global influences, and innovative performance art, all in an intimate, accessible setting right in the heart of Cypress.
Curated by Dr. Brian Herrington, chair of the LSC-CyFair Music Department, the Discovery Recital Series was created to spark curiosity and connection while showcasing exceptional musical talent from the Houston arts scene and beyond.
“This series includes three events, each with specially curated themes that makes for an evening that is both entertaining and enlightening. The programs feature the finest musicians in the Houston arts scene and beyond, and it is a great way for students and their friends and families to engage with classical, world and experimental music,” said Dr. Brian Herrington, Music Department Chair and series curator. “Come experience the excitement of high-quality live music making right in your own backyard.”

The series begins on February 20 with “Sacred, Folk and Soul,” featuring Colombian violinist Mauricio, a guest artist known throughout Houston for his work in Latin American music productions alongside acclaimed Venezuelan Grammy-winning artists including Eddy Marcano, Baden Goyo, and Hector Molina. The program blends works by Gershwin with original compositions by Mauricio and is presented in collaboration with the LSC-CyFair Composers Club, offering audiences a rich mix of tradition and contemporary creativity.
On March 6, the series continues with “Melodías de la Herencia: Exploring Nationalism and Western Influences in Latin-American Music.” This performance explores how composers across Latin America wove Indigenous, Afro-descendant, and European musical traditions into distinct national identities. Presented in collaboration with the Latin American Student Organization (LASO), the evening highlights music as both cultural expression and historical storytelling, resonating deeply with the diverse Cy-Fair community.
The Discovery Recital Series concludes on April 10 with a dynamic and immersive performance featuring opera singer Sarah Dyer and ConTempo Studios. Known for blending classical music with disciplines such as circus arts, yoga, and visual art, ConTempo Studios brings an interdisciplinary approach that transforms live performance into a multi-sensory experience, offering something both inspiring and unexpected for audiences of all ages.
