Local Nonprofit Designated a Disaster Distribution Site for the Houston Food Bank
Cy-Fair Helping Hands’ (CFHH) dedication to serving the hungry in our community is being recognized by the Houston Food Bank’s (HFB) designation of CFHH as a Disaster Distribution Partner Site.
“Proactive preparation for a disaster is critical for our community,” said Janet Ryan, CFHH’s Executive Director. “Prior to a disaster, the Houston Food Bank routinely prepares trailers of food to distribute throughout the eighteen counties they serve, should a disaster arise. They work with partner organizations when the skies are clear – for example, outside of hurricane season – so that food can be quickly deployed in case of a disaster. We are honored to be part of carrying out their mission to provide food for better lives, while they play a key role in CFHH’s mission to bring hope to the homeless and hungry.”
People facing food insecurity are often the hardest hit by a disaster. Families can find themselves in dire straits financially and unsure of where their next meal will come from due to unexpected situations such as lost wages due to illness, a divorce, a job loss, or even as we see now, due to the rising cost of groceries and an inflated cost of living.
“Cy-Fair Helping Hands currently provides food to over 2,000 people each month,” stated Ryan. Founded in 2010, CFHH aims to help the homeless and hungry residents of Cy-Fair become self-sufficient through the provision of Emergency Shelter, scholarships for unprivileged students, Homeless Outreach, a Homeless Day Shelter, programs for homeless students, and events and programs during the holidays and at back-to-school time.
“Whether a disaster is due to a hurricane, a long-term freeze, or even a long-term power outage, those who are struggling financially have very limited resources at their disposal. We expect the number of people coming for assistance to increase during an emergency situation. But thanks to a very strong team of volunteers, CFHH is prepared to be a place where needs are being met and people do not have to go hungry.”
During the days and weeks following the disaster, CFHH and the HFB remain committed to working alongside those who need a helping hand as they recover.
