Living Legacy Volunteer Highlight: Cy-Fair Fire Department Assistant Chief

July 09 2023

Mike Clements came to Texas from Colorado when he chose to attend Texas A&M to study Animal Science. He worked nights and weekends for an ambulance service to help pay tuition, not thinking it would lead to a full-time career. Twenty years later, he's an Assistant Chief in administration for the Cy-Fair Fire Department, a Battalion Chief for the City of College Station, and a board member of the Living Legacy Center.

The Living Legacy Center (LLC) was established to bridge the gap for families in the Cypress-Fairbanks (CYFAIR) community and surrounding areas by locating and connecting them with legal and social services. These families come from underserved communities and represent CYFAIR’s' most vulnerable: senior citizens, veterans, and individuals with both physical and intellectual disabilities and their families.

To date, the LLC has helped hundreds of the community’s most vulnerable citizens and serves as an important partner to CYFAIR’s numerous charitable organizations. The LLC campus is on Cypress North Houston Road and serves as a focal point of the community, where people can work together to create and provide solutions to some of CYFAIR’s pressing social challenges.

The LLC board consists of passionate individuals from the CYFAIR community with with a wide range of knowledge and experience in the service industry, including Clements. Hear his perspective on the LLC and his involvement with this local nonprofit.

How does your main job intersect with the Living Legacy Center?
As a community leader, I regularly engage with other leaders and Elizabeth Hilbun and I are both involved in the Chamber of Commerce. I'm a bridge builder and connecting people with different resources is a goal that aligns with the Living Legacy Center's.

What projects have you done with the Living Legacy Center?
I had some connections that were able to get some needed fax machines and printers. I also got them in touch with the Cy-Fair Professional Firefighter's union and we team to coordinate resources and charities that can help in post-emergency scenarios.

How is the Living Legacy Center different from other charities you've worked with?
I like that the Living Legacy Center is like a hub and all the other local charities and volunteers are the spokes. It isn't so narrowly defined and it can be flexible to address several different situations. That's useful because emergencies and bad times don't discriminate, they apply to everybody.
