Klein ISD Partners with WaterLogic to Advance Smart Irrigation and Cut Water Costs

September 23 2025

As the 2025–2026 school year gets underway, Klein Independent School District (Klein ISD) is turning a new page in sustainability with the completion of a major irrigation technology upgrade. The district has officially wrapped up the installation of HydroPoint Data Systems smart controllers across the district, a move made possible through a partnership with WaterLogic.

The effort signals a district-wide shift toward precision irrigation, water conservation, and long-term cost savings—all while preserving the district’s extensive grounds for the benefit of students, staff, and the surrounding community.

Smart Irrigation for Smarter Stewardship

Under the direction of the district’s Maintenance Department, which manages more than 9.4 million square feet of facilities and 1,509 acres of grounds, the new HydroPoint system equips Klein ISD with state-of-the-art irrigation controllers backed by daily monitoring and weather-based automation.

WaterLogic, a Houston-founded company established in 2002 by Charles Racusin, combines decades of commercial landscaping expertise with smart irrigation technology to deliver sustainable water management solutions. Known for overseeing properties from Nike’s headquarters to the City of Seattle Parks, the company has built its reputation on pairing advanced technology with professional, hands-on service—a model now helping school districts like Klein ISD reduce waste and optimize efficiency.

“The success of any water-saving technology isn’t just about the device—it’s about the daily oversight,” said Racusin. “That’s the secret sauce of our service model.”

WaterLogic’s irrigation management system includes daily system checks, mobile access for campus staff and landscapers, monthly water usage assessments, and quarterly savings reports that track progress over time. Importantly, the service does not stop at installation. On-the-ground support, system training, and responsive troubleshooting are part of every WaterLogic contract.

Budget-Conscious Conservation

Klein ISD’s water usage data underscores why this investment couldn’t have come at a better time. According to internal utility reports, the district spent over $1.16 million on irrigation alone during fiscal year 2025, using over 13.4 million gallons of water on outdoor irrigation across its campuses.

That figure represents a 13% increase in irrigation costs compared to the previous year, with spikes observed during the summer and early fall months. In August 2023, for example, the district recorded its highest single-month irrigation cost at $48,776, using over 6.25 million gallons.

“Water is often an invisible cost driver,” Racusin added. “Hidden leaks, poor sprinkler performance, or old infrastructure can quietly drain budgets, especially in large districts like Klein.”

WaterLogic’s solution is tailored to uncover these issues early and mitigate their impacts through their professional Wet Check inspection services, which Klein ISD now benefits from as part of the ongoing partnership.

A Growing District with Big Needs

Located in northwest Harris County, Klein ISD serves more than 53,000 students across 88 square miles. With 50 campuses—ranging from elementary to high school programs and alternative education sites—the district’s irrigation needs are as diverse as they are vast.

Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown and the seven-member Board of Trustees have continued to prioritize operational sustainability, and the HydroPoint installation is part of that commitment.

In addition to irrigation upgrades, Klein ISD continues to explore district-wide improvements in energy efficiency, maintenance innovation, and cost-effective facility operations that support its broader mission to enhance the instructional environment and protect public investment.

For residents, families, and staff members across Klein ISD, the benefits of the district’s irrigation upgrade may go largely unseen—but the impact will be felt for years to come in the form of healthier landscapes, lower water bills, and a stronger commitment to environmental stewardship.
