Katy Veterans Launch Annual Fireworks Stand to Support Local Service Programs During America’s 250th Birthday Celebration

Katy / Fulshear  /  Katy / Fulshear
June 22 2026

For many Katy-area families, buying fireworks is part of the annual Fourth of July tradition. This year, that tradition comes with an added opportunity to support local veterans while celebrating a milestone in American history.

The American Legion Auxiliary Unit 164 Katy is once again operating the American Legion Fireworks Stand at American Legion Post 164, located at 22125 Kingsland Blvd. in Katy. Open from June 24 through July 5, the veteran-run fundraiser helps support programs that serve veterans, military families, and local youth while commemorating America’s upcoming 250th birthday.

The stand features a wide selection of fireworks and promotions, including buy-one-get-one-free offers and discounts on select items while supplies last. More importantly, organizers say every purchase helps fund the American Legion’s mission of service in the Katy community.

More Than Fireworks: A Community Tradition Supporting Veterans

While many fireworks stands appear only around July 4th and New Year's Eve celebrations, the American Legion Post 164 stand represents something larger than a seasonal business.

American Legion Post 164 is part of The American Legion, the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization. Chartered by Congress in 1919 following World War I, The American Legion advocates for veterans, supports military families, promotes patriotism, and invests in youth leadership programs across the country.

Locally, Post 164 has deep roots in Katy. Founded in 2001, the post was established by area veterans seeking a place to continue serving their community after military service. In 2004, the post was named in honor of Lt. Jonathan D. Rozier, a Katy High School graduate and U.S. Army officer who was killed in action during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Over the years, Post 164 has become a familiar presence throughout the Katy area, participating in community events, memorial ceremonies, veteran outreach efforts, and youth programs that help develop future leaders.

How Fireworks Sales Benefit the Katy Community

Proceeds from the annual fireworks fundraiser help support a variety of programs and initiatives throughout the year, including:

  • American Legion Boys State leadership scholarships for local students
  • Constitutional speech and scholarship competitions
  • Youth leadership and educational opportunities
  • Veterans outreach programs
  • Memorial ceremonies and patriotic observances
  • Wreaths Across America participation
  • Community events and volunteer initiatives

The fundraiser also helps sustain the post's ongoing mission of supporting veterans and preserving the legacy of military service within the Katy area.

For many volunteers, the event reflects the organization's long-standing philosophy of veterans helping veterans while continuing to serve their local community.

Fireworks Safety Remains a Priority

As families prepare for Independence Day celebrations, organizers encourage residents to make safety a priority.

According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), fireworks cause thousands of injuries and structure fires across the United States each year. The organization recommends several key safety practices:

  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
  • Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby.
  • Light fireworks one at a time and move away quickly.
  • Never relight malfunctioning fireworks.
  • Avoid aiming fireworks toward people, homes, vehicles, or pets.
  • Keep spectators at a safe distance.
  • Soak used fireworks in water before disposal.

Sparklers, often viewed as harmless, can burn at temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees and should be handled carefully, and always with adult supervision.

Know the Rules Before You Light Fireworks

Residents are also encouraged to verify local regulations before purchasing or using fireworks.

Within the official City of Katy limits, fireworks are prohibited under City of Katy Ordinance 253. Discharging fireworks within city limits is a ticketable offense that can result in fines of up to $200, along with possible seizure and destruction of fireworks.

The prohibition does not automatically extend to many surrounding areas in Greater Katy, including communities such as Cinco Ranch, Firethorne, and Williamsburg that are located in unincorporated portions of Harris, Fort Bend, or Waller counties. However, residents in those areas may still be subject to county restrictions, fire marshal regulations, deed restrictions, or homeowners association rules.

Residents who are unsure whether they live within Katy city limits can use the City of Katy's "Am I a Resident?" tool or contact the city for verification.

Where fireworks are legally permitted, users should ensure they have permission from the property owner, remain away from public roadways, and operate fireworks in open areas with adequate clearance.

Celebrating Independence Day While Giving Back

As communities across the country prepare for America's 250th birthday celebrations, the annual American Legion Fireworks Stand offers Katy-area residents a chance to support local veterans while preparing for their own Independence Day festivities.

For those planning to purchase fireworks this season, organizers hope residents will consider making their holiday dollars go a little further by supporting an organization that works year-round to serve veterans, develop young leaders, and strengthen community connections throughout the Katy area.
